My keyboard freezes for a few seconds, this has been happening for months.

Sometimes when I use my keyboard it freezes for a good couple of seconds,

  • not being able to type anything in that period of time but it'll hold down the last key.
Previous keys I typed during when it freezes types right after the keyboard fixes itself.

I've also gotten a new keyboard due to this problem but it just happens with my new keyboard as well so I bet it isn't the keyboard itself.

This issue has been going on for months as I can't find a simple fix to this problem.

Thank you for the additional information. Both suspicions are possible causes of the issue. Let's try methods related to the keyboard, PC performance, and isolating the issue if it is caused by a program or software.

    1. Run Keyboard troubleshooter:

Go to Settings > System > Troubleshoot.

    Select Other Troubleshooters

Scroll down and select Keyboard, then click on Run.

    1. Press Windows + X > Select Device Manager

    Expand the Keyboards section.

Right-click on Standard PS/2 keyboard driver and select Update driver.

    Choose Search automatically for drivers

If the system says 'The best drivers for this device are already installed'

Right-click it again and click Uninstall.

    Restart your computer.

    1. Run a quick scan with Windows Defender to remove any potential viruses.

In the search bar, type Windows Security.

Select Windows Security from the results.

In the left pane, choose Virus & Threat Protection.

    Click Scan options.

tick the radio button next to Quick Scan, then click Scan Now.

Let the scan complete. Windows Defender will remove any threats it finds.

    1. Please try performing a clean boot. If the issue does not occur in a clean boot, it suggests that another program or software running in the background might be interfering.

A "clean boot" starts Windows with a minimal set of drivers and startup programs, so that you can determine whether a background program or software is interfering with the issue.

Press Windows + R, type msconfig, and Hit OK.

On the Services tab of System Configuration, check Hide all Microsoft services

    Click Disable All. Select Apply.

On the Startup tab of System Configuration, click Open Task Manager.

On the Startup tab in Task Manager, for each Enabled startup item, select the item and then click Disable.

    Close Task Manager

On the Startup tab of System Configuration, select OK.

    Reboot your PC.

If the issue is not occurring there, scroll down the Microsoft article and look for 'How to determine what is causing the problem after you do a clean boot,' and follow the suggested steps to fix the issue.

    1. If the issue persists, please try the suggested steps here and check each time if it resolves the issue. If not, please proceed to the next method until the issue is resolved. https://windowsreport.com/keyboard-delay-window...

I am using a desktop computer, and I'm not exactly sure but it just suddenly occurred one day.

I have one suspicion which might be because my PC has low disc space and I don't have enough storage which makes my PC run slower.
Or it could be because I downloaded something but I do not recalling downloading anything harmful.

Hi Frosteey. My name is Lester, and I am an Independent Advisor. I'm sorry that you are experiencing this issue. I'd be more than happy to assist you.

What changes to your computer before the issue occurred?

Is this a laptop or a desktop computer? Thank you

I tried to try most of the options but the first and second one weren't possible.

The 4th solution though I think did work, but now after disabling everything from a clean boot-

my audio is gone and most of my applications for updates obviously are turned off.

But I don't know which application might be the one affecting my keyboard so I don't want to risk it and turn each application back on.

Thank you for helping me so far.

Edit* : I did enable everything back again and the issue still does occur.
So I think it might be an application that's causing the problem.

I still do not know how to find the application that might be the one causing the issue in the first place.

You're most welcome. If your keyboard works properly under clean boot, it indicates that one of the programs or software you disabled is causing the issue. Thank you.
