Locate and Add Icon Pictures To Folder > Properties > Customization

Hello

I located a website years ago that contained literally thousand of Icon Pictures for folder customization.

I was able to add more to my version of Windows back then quite successfully and had an amazing looking computer because of them.

Now with Windows 11 on this new PC I would like to do the same with it.

I have attached some pics of what I am talking about to better illustrate it for all.

Can it be done, and how do I add the icons, or do I need a .dll editor to do so?

Thanks for any help in advance.👍🙂

    Thank you for your reply.

If you want to replace the old icons with these new ones, what you need to do is add these images to the old dll file and generate a new dll file. The file is stored at %systemroot%\system32\shell32.dll

You can use third party software to do this, but due to forum rules I can't provide the names of these programs, you can look for them in search engines.

    Best regards

Hello Brian and thanks for the information you provided.

I think you misunderstood what I said, so a friend has suggested I point it in tech terms.

I want to add more icons to the stash that are already there.

Below in this picture are a few that I want to add.

Any idea as to how I add these to the icons to the ones that already exist in Microsoft.

Or do I have to create a whole new .dll file and replace the one that is already there?

    Hello, Tim J Rogers

    Welcome to the Microsoft Community!

Thank you for your feedback. I have read the information you provided. You mentioned that you want to change the default icon of your system and then get a better computer and I understand your thinking.

You can try the following to make the change.

The main desktop icons (such as This PC, Recycle Bin, Network, and a few others) are the easiest icons to change. Windows 11 has built-in options for doing this.

    1. Right-click an empty area of your desktop and click Personalize. 2.
    2. Click Themes, scroll down again, and then click Desktop Icon Settings.
    3. Click “Desktop Icon Settings.” Select the icon you want to change, and then click “Change Icon”.
    4. Click Change Icon. When you click Change Icon, you'll see a list of other Windows icons you may recognize. You are looking at the contents of Imageres.dll, which contains hundreds of default Windows icons. You can choose from any of them if you want, or you can load other icons by clicking Browse.
    5. Click Browse to navigate to the other icons. Navigate to the location where you saved the icon, click it, and then click OK.
    6. Navigate to the folder with the new icon, select it, and then click OK. After you click OK, a preview will show you what the icon will look like. If you like the changes, click Apply. Otherwise, click Restore Defaults.
    7. Click Apply. The icon should change immediately. If it doesn't, right-click an empty area of your desktop and click Refresh, or restart your computer. You can always go back to the Desktop Icon Settings window and click Restore Defaults to undo any customizations.

I hope this information has been helpful. If you have any questions, please let me know and I will be happy to help you further.

    Best regards
