- Fallout 3 runs as well on Win10 and 11 as it did on Win7 (had plenty of bugs out of the gate, and a tendency to corrupt saves).
Even the original disc based version. As do the vast majority of games that can be downloaded from EPIC, Steam, etc.
I also got the GOTY version of game from EPIC on a give away. I haven't bothered installing it (my disc version has been modded),
but can't imagine it is incompatible with Win10\11.
This shouldn't be an issue with the GOTY version from EPIC, but... FO3 had a problem with multi-core cpu's in it's early days.
This will cause the game to crash at the end of the opening FMV, just as the actual game play starts.
- The fix for this is...
Open up the fallout.ini file in: Documents\My Games\Fallout3
- Find the line:
bUseThreadedAI=0 - change it to:
bUseThreadedAI=1 - Add another line after it and insert:
iNumHWThreads=2 - This will limit the game to 2 cores and prevent the engine bug from causing the game to freeze.
- The main issue with Win10 and 11 and old games is not compatibility. It is the over vigilant security features, which fortunately,
can be disabled.
I had a number of games from Steam, and one or two from EPIC that failed to launch because of....
Settings > Privacy and Security > Windows Security > App & Browser Control > Exploit Protection > Force Randomisation for Images
having been enabled (I believe it is normally off by default).
Memory integrity may also affect some games (mine is off so I can use the software for my Logitech G27 wheel).
- The original game breaker from MS is built into Win10\11. This is DRM blocking, which prevents all disc based games that use
SafeDisk and SecuROM (used by fewer games than SD) copy protection from launching.
