How to fix the issue of Windows update reverting graphics drivers to older versions after I update them from Intel website?

Hardware: Samsung Galaxybook 2, model NP550XED-KF3BR, I5 1235U, 24Gb RAM, Intel® Iris® Xe Graphics

Updating graphics drivers at Intel website to the latest version (31.0.x) results in Windows Update trying to revert it to an earlier version (30.0.x), which has much worse performance. The only workaround available is to keep reverting the drivers to the updated version after Windows rolls it back. The thing is, this issue comes back everytime Windows updates itself, and I don't want to keep disabling Windows updates just to prevent this. Furthermore, disabling it is only a temporary thing, since it has a maximum period of time it allows users to do. I need a definitive solution, and, as I've seen through the community, many people have been suffering from the same issue and are also waiting for it.

Version Windows is trying to keep installed:

Latest version to date:

Windows for home | Windows 11 | Windows update

Thanks for the answer. I really appreciate anyone who can give part of their own personal time to help other people solve their problem.

I did not left the "Get the latest updates" option on (it is the second option from top to bottom on the first image I provided, but it is written in my system's native language so it might not be clear to people that don't speak Portuguese).

Well, sorry to say, but that's not a solution at all. Windows Update should not force on my system a driver with a worse performance, regardless of its provider.

Then again, Intel is as much of a provider as is Samsung, even if the later "optimizes" Intel's hardware for their final product. I don't see why I shouldn't take Intel drivers over Samsung's if it gives me better performance. And I put quotes on "optimizes" because, as I've mentioned, Samsung drivers have significant underperformance compared to the latest Intel drives. Even if those are "wrong", as the owner of the system I bought I have the right to choose them.

Finally, Windows Update is a service provided by Microsoft, not Samsung or Intel. I get that it might be trying to "update" the system with information provided by the manufacturer, but from the moment an issue is reported with it, users expect, within reason, that a satisfying solution is presented by Microsoft (because it runs the updates directly from the users' systems). I have found numerous complaints about the same behaviour I mentioned, and not a single one offers anything in the form of a definitive solution.

Once again, I really apprectiate you taking your time to answer me, I'm affraid it doesn't solve my problem but thank you anyways.

Edit: Running Samsung Update gives me no problem at all. It doesn't try to overide my Intel graphics driver with its own. The issue lies specifically with Windows Update.

I am having the same stupid issue. Since the Windows version 24H2, Windows is reverting my AMD drivers to a very old driver (1 year ago to be mor exact) and for instance, OBS isn't letting me to stream. Each time I install the latest AMD driver and restarting the OS, at first time works, the driver version is right, but once I let to use the PC to the next day, the driver has been reverted to the previous version.

Windows Update drivers just seem intent on causing dramas ;)

Check out the support article from Intel, make sure you don't execute a clean install, keeping the old drivers in the background seems to help, although I've had about 10 different versions of this driver provided by Windows which seems to remove the other hence the intel support isn't always helpful but it does seem to reduce the issues.

    Good luck!

You update drivers from the system maker and no other source.

The drivers are edited by the maker for their systems, so the Intel drivers are incorrect.

By default, win 11 update auto updates only critical win updates, and nothing else unless you have made the mistake of selecting the "Get latest updates" option, and if you have turn it off. (It includes drivers)

You obtain both Bios & Drivers updates from the PC Maker, there should be a shortcut on your system to that makers update utility, and no other source.

Then set Bios to Defaults & Pwr to balanced.

At the end of the day shutdown, do NOT leave in sleep
