I received a successful password reset notification for a Microsoft account that appears to be using my gmail account. I don't have any microsoft accounts open under this email address.

Apologies if this is in the wrong place, but I can't really find a way to notify MS about this suspicious activity.

I received an email early this morning from accountprotection.microsoft.com that my MS account password was changed.

The email associated with this change is a Gmail account that I do not use for my Microsoft account access.

At first I thought this was phishing but upon looking at the sender's address and the links within, the message appears legitimate.

So now I'm worried someone has somehow managed to successfully create a Microsoft account using my Gmail.

Is there any way to notify MS and ask them to take a look/assist?

    Hello, this is Emily.

This email address is legit. It is possible that someone set up their account using your Gmail address, can be due to typo. And they probably have trouble signing in now hence they tried to reset password. In this case, your gmail is completely safe, it is just a username for Microsoft account, but not your Microsoft account.

What you can do is go to https://account.live.com, use tha username and use the "cannot sign in" option to see if you can reset the password and get in. If you can, close the account.

    Hi Emily,

Thanks for the quick response. I should have thought to try that. I was able to test using the cannot sign in option as suggested and my Gmail doesn't link to any MS account. So it's all good.

    Thanks again!
