McAfee Virus alert

This morning I've received a Virus attack notice from McAfee, warning that several viruses have been detected (screenshot attached). And of course McAfee will protect me & hey presto they have a special discount if I renew immediately. My PC was pre-installed with McAfee on purchase in Dec 2022 but I lapsed it after the free period ended & have relied on Windows Defender since. I've done a Windows Defender full scan (second screenshot) & this says I'm clear, & normally I'd be inclined to dismiss the McAfee 'warning' as a sales push - however, last night night whilst I was asleep my wife took my laptop & watched Chinese movies 😡 & these sites are packed with crypto links, **** & goodness knows what other trash so it wouldn't be the biggest surprise if she's downloaded something untoward. Should I be comforted that Windows Defender is giving me the all-clear when McAfee isn't, or is McAfee giving me warnings that I should heed?

I have a Surface Pro 9 running Windows 11, browser is Chrome with DDG search engine.

Advice appreciated please.

Everyone here is providing accurate information, it's just not common that people truly understand the world of McAfee products as it exists today, or at least that they feel it's important to realizing how and why you might receive these advertisements in the first place.

Ther following search results were found in seconds using the same DDG search engine you use and display quite clearly why you might receive these McAfee advertisements, since it's a potentially big moneymaker for the affiliate network that McAfee has long cultivated to sell their products. However, since Windows Defender became a free portion of Windows 8 and later, the pressure on sales of 3rd-party products likely has caused a significant decline.

    McAfee affiliate advertising at DuckDuckGo

I won't link any of the specific results for obvious reasons, but note that one of the top hits in my case indicated a commission rate of $10/sale, so as it also stated, that's a potentially lucrative opportunity for those willing to promote these on their web offerings, or in fact via any other questionable method such as advertising popups or less reputable, even potentially malicious methods making it appear that malware is already present.

So, all I'm saying is that it's really no surprise that questionable advertising like this exists, it's simply surprising to me that nearly everyone doesn't already know that it does.

    Hi Berkshire_Yorkie,

I'm Ramesh, here to answer your query at the Microsoft Community.

That looks like a sales push. If Microsoft Defender is active, that means McAfee wouldn't be running. The sales page shows the list of "viruses found," but I guess it's a generic sales webpage that shows the same content when the link is accessed from any system.

Having said that, if you don't plan to renew McAfee, you may completely uninstall McAfee. If necessary, use the MCPR tool from McAfee to uninstall the product cleanly.

If you'd like the system inspected for malware, you can run the Farbar scanner and share your logs on OneDrive. The Farbar scanner is an advanced tool for checking for active malware and removing it.

    • Download Farbar Recovery Scan Tool (FRST64.exe) from BleepingComputer: [https://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/farba...](https://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/farbar-recovery-scan-tool/)

    • Rename FRST64.exe to EnglishFRST64.exe.

    • Run the program. Don't check or uncheck any options. Click "Scan".

    • Upload the two logs, FRST.txt and Addition.txt, to your OneDrive and share the link here.

Note: If Microsoft Edge or Chrome mislabels the Farbar Scanner executable as PUA/malware, choose to keep it by tapping … in the bottom bar, choosing Keep, and then choosing Keep anyway in the dialog that appears.

I get these too. You should know when your McAfee subscription will expire. If you don't remember, then sign into your McAfee account and check. Image below shows my expiration dates.

    Don't fall for these scams.

Check your computer and see what protection is showing.

    Thank you Ramesh,

If it wasn't that my wife had been watching Chinese movies the previous night I'd have definitely dismissed the McAfee notices as a sales push & ignore them. The timing could of course just be a coincidence.

Anyway I'll use the uninstall tool & run Farber & let you know how I get on.
