How do I make the primary display adaptor as the dedicated GPU instead of the intel integrated on my laptop?

I have an older laptop hp pavilion 15-e033tx. It has two GPUs: INTEL integrated 128mb and amd 8600hd 2 gb. All the drivers are installed and I am using windows 11. I am able to select different applications to use one or the other GPU but what I am unable to do and would like to do is select the amd gpu as the primary and default display adaptor as in for display 1 on my laptop. A while ago, on a different version of windows it used to but I hadn't used the laptop for a while and I bought new hard drive installed new windows. Everything otherwise is working fine but it uses intel integrated graphics as the primary adaptor because of that I have limited options of resolution settings and besides the specific applications, overall windows isn't as smooth because its only using 128mb of dedicated memory. dxdiag and device both show both graphics card. I don't have an option for changing the primary display in the BIOS. I have set the power settings to all performance. global settings for switchable graphics is also set to high performance on battery and plugged in. I have tried to disable the intel graphics in device manager but the windows goes to basic adaptor in display settings and doesn't recognize dedicated amd gpu as the default gpu. AMD will still work for example I have selected chrome to use AMD and it will do that. I checked in the task manager but I cannot get the window to bypass intel or basic adaptor and windows to default to dedicated. it shows dedicated memory 128mb. I have had it where it would show dedicated 2048 and 8gb total included shared before but not after I reset the entire laptop. I have searched and searched but haven't found the solution. Any help would be appreciated!

Thanks for reaching out! I'm an Independent Advisor and a Microsoft user like you.

To make the dedicated GPU the primary display adapter on your HP Pavilion 15-e033tx laptop, you can follow these steps. Note that the process involves both software settings within Windows and potentially BIOS settings, though the latter may not always be available on all laptops.

    Method 1: Using Device Manager

    1. Open Device Manager:
      • Press Windows + R, type devmgmt.msc, and press Enter.
    2. Disable Integrated Graphics:
      • Expand the Display adapters section.
      • Right-click on the Intel integrated graphics and select Disable device.
      • Confirm any warnings that appear.

    Method 2: BIOS Settings

    1. Access BIOS:
      • Restart your laptop and press the appropriate key (usually F2F10Delete, or Esc) to enter the BIOS setup. The exact key may vary, so refer to your laptop's manual if needed.
    2. Change Primary GPU:
      • Navigate to the Advanced or Integrated Peripherals section.
      • Look for settings related to Graphics Configuration or Primary Display.
      • Set the primary display to PEG/PCI or a similar option that prioritizes the dedicated GPU over the integrated one.
      • Save and exit the BIOS.

    Method 3: Windows Graphics Settings

    1. Open Graphics Settings:
      • Go to Settings > System > Display.
      • Scroll down and click on Graphics settings.
    2. Set Preferred GPU:
      • Under Graphics performance preference, select the application you want to configure.
      • Click Options and choose High performance to use the dedicated GPU.

    Troubleshooting

    • Check for Driver Issues:
      • Ensure that both Intel and AMD drivers are up to date. Sometimes, outdated drivers can cause conflicts.
    • BIOS Limitations:
      • If your BIOS does not provide an option to change the primary GPU, you may be limited to using software settings within Windows.
    • Windows Basic Display Adapter Issue:
      • If disabling the integrated GPU in Device Manager causes Windows to default to the basic display adapter, re-enable the integrated GPU and try setting the preferred GPU for specific applications instead.

By following these steps, you should be able to set your AMD GPU as the primary display adapter, improving overall performance and allowing for better resolution settings.

If the above steps aren't working, it's probable that your laptop doesn't have a mux switch.

Please do let me know if the method I suggested works for you or if you need further assistance.
