I have an ASUS VivoBook (Home Edition) and I'm having a major issue with my laptop. Upon starting it up, the system heats up significantly and the fans become unbearably loud. I need to find a solution to this problem urgently. Are there any recommendations you can provide me with to fix this issue besides resetting my laptop?

Greetings, Jayden! My name is Arif, and I will assist you today.

I'm sorry to hear that you're facing this issue. Loud or increasingly loud fans can have several reasons. Before resetting your computer, have you checked the fan mode settings? ASUS laptops typically offer different fan modes such as Silent, Balanced, and Performance. Adjusting these modes can help regulate fan speed and noise. You can find this setting in your laptop’s control center or system settings.

Here are some additional steps you can take:

    • Monitor your computer's CPU and memory usage using the Task Manager. Look for any abnormal processes consuming excessive CPU or memory resources. Closing unnecessary background applications can reduce the workload on your system.
    • Check for dust accumulation inside the device, especially near the fan and heat sink. If you're comfortable, you can open your laptop and gently clean the internal components using compressed air or a soft brush. If you're unsure how to do this, it's better to take your computer to a hardware shop for professional cleaning.
    • You mentioned considering resetting your computer. Before doing so, ensure to back up all your files. After resetting, check if the issue with the fans persists.

    Warm Regards,

    Arif

    Dear Jayden,

Setting the fan mode to “Silent” generally doesn’t mean the fans will remain off entirely. Instead, it aims to reduce fan noise by running them at lower speeds. As for your PC overheating, it depends on your computer usage and performance. You can adjust the fan settings and monitor the performance for a while to see if it's overheating. Here are some points to consider:

    • Adjusting fan modes on your PC, particularly opting for Silent Mode, can significantly reduce noise by slowing down fan speeds. This setting, however, is adaptive; if your CPU or GPU temperatures surge, the system may ramp up fan speeds to prevent overheating. Generally, unless your CPU hits critical temperatures, Silent Mode shouldn’t noticeably affect performance.
    • To ensure your system stays within safe temperature ranges, it's crucial to monitor CPU and GPU temperatures while in Silent Mode. Keeping them in check minimizes the likelihood of performance dips. Tools like HWiNFO64 are invaluable for monitoring temperature, clock speeds, and fan activity.
    • Moreover, the efficiency of your cooling system—comprising the cooler and thermal paste—plays a pivotal role. High-quality coolers and thermal paste facilitate superior heat dissipation, granting more leeway in Silent Mode operation. Investing in premium cooling solutions can significantly enhance the effectiveness of Silent Mode without compromising performance.

    Warm Regards,

    Arif

If the fan mode is set to Silent, will the fans remain off, causing the PC to overheat?

    Dear Jayden,

First, you need to check if your computer has "Asus Control Center" (ACC). I don't think all Asus laptops have this application pre-installed. The availability of this software depends on the specific model and series of your ASUS laptop.

The ASUS Control Center is a utility that allows users to manage various system settings, including fan control, power profiles, and hardware monitoring. It provides an interface to adjust fan modes (such as "Silent," "Balanced," and "Performance") based on your preferences and workload. ACC also offers features like overclocking, power management, and system diagnostics.

    Warm Regards,

    Arif
