How can I repair Microsoft Edge?

Since the latest update of Windows, the Edge browser randomly opens multiple tabs, literally overnight. I don't use Edge as a browser, personally, but do need it for when I work remote. We use windows security and have checked for viruses as well as malware. All looks well in that arena. We suspect a type of malware but haven't been able to locate it. I've tried the modify/repair option in add/uninstall menu more than once with no luck. What else can I do?

Hello! I've cleared the browser cache and set security settings to my preferences.

I'm not opposed to uninstalling and reinstalling Edge. However, I can't find a legitimate way to do so. In the add/remove programs app, the only option available is to "modify", which runs a "repair" if desired. I've accomplished that a few times with no success. I have no need to import saved data.

    Thank you for your help!

    Good morning! Thank you!

    1. Version 124.0.2478.80 (Official build) (64-bit)
    2. I don't use Edge for personal browsing so I don't use InPrivate Browsing. I don't know if this happens in incognito. I'll open a tab and see what happens overnight. However, Edge is opening multiple tabs without prompting. It doesn't appear that any of them open randomly in incognito.

Thank you for the reply! My issue is that Microsoft Edge is opening random tabs while the service is closed, while I'm not using the service. I don't use Edge for personal browsing. Additionally, Edge is disabled at startup. It should only open if I choose to open it. I suspect it may be an issue with copilot. However, my laptop runs the same windows version and does not encounter the same issue.

I need to know what to do to keep Edge from opening random tabs on its own.

    Thanks!

Greetings, Cynthia! My name is Arif, and I will assist you today.

I'm sorry to hear that you're facing this issue. Please try the following steps:

    • Open Microsoft Edge.
    • Click on the three horizontal dots in the top-right corner to open the menu.
    • Go to “Settings.”
    • Scroll down to the “On startup” section.
    • Choose the option that best suits your preference (e.g., "Open The New tab Page" and "Home Button New tab Page").

    Warm Regards,

    Arif
