How do I access my SD card?

I'm not able to access my SD card. It's connected to my computer with a USB which I can see in File Explorer and Disk Manager. It has the letter D: assigned to it but when I try to access it I get the message "Please insert a disk into USB drive (D:)". I've also tried to reformat the card through File Explorer but I get the message "Windows was unable to complete the format". I've tried to format it from Disk Manager but no option appears, I'm not sure if formatting is different between the two programs. I don't know about partitions or anything else regarding external storage devices so I've been having trouble following other online guides. The ones I have been able to follow haven't worked at all. The SD card is brand new and has nothing on it. I've included images of some of the property tabs of the drive but I'm not sure if any of it is useful or not.

    Hi, August Lofstrom-Abary

    Welcome to the Microsoft Community

Thank you for contacting us about accessing your SD card on your computer. Don't worry, I will assist you with this issue. Based on the information you provided, there may be an issue with the SD card itself or its format.

To resolve this issue, I recommend the following steps:

    • Try using a different USB port or a different USB cable to connect the SD card to your computer. Sometimes, connection issues can occur due to a faulty port or cable.
    • Check if the SD card can be recognized and accessed on another computer. This will help determine whether the problem is specific to your computer or the SD card itself.
    • If no computer can access the SD card, it may be damaged or defective. In this case, you may need to contact the manufacturer or retailer for a replacement.
    • If the SD card is recognized on another computer but you still can't access it on your computer, there may be a driver issue. Try visiting the manufacturer's website to update the USB controller driver.
    • If you are unable to format the SD card through File Explorer or Disk Manager, you can try formatting the SD card using Rufus. Please note that formatting the SD card will erase all data on it, so make sure to back up all important files before proceeding.

If you're still having trouble, please provide additional details such as the make and model of your computer, the version of Windows you're using, and any error messages you're receiving.

Thank you for your patience as we work together to resolve this issue.

    Best regards,

Martin | Microsoft Community Support Specialist

    Hi Martin

Thanks for the help. I tried connecting the card to another computer as you said. The other computer uses the Google operating system and I was able to format the SD card on it. I'm now able to open the SD card on my computer. I appreciate the helpful and quick response.
