My desktop speakers still have audio when the headphones are plugged in.

I'm not tech smart, so please don't use techy language. :) I have a Lenovo all in one desk top running Windows 11. I have a simple set of headphones that are plugged into the head phone jack on the computer. When I play anything with sound, I can hear it through both the headphones and the speakers. I've had the computer about a year, but I just started using the headphones recently so I don't know how long this might have been an issue. I've checked the settings and the only sound device that shows up is the speakers. I just need a way to turn the speakers off without turning the head phones off.

Thank you

Thank you very much for reaching out! As an Independent Advisor and fellow Microsoft user, I'm more than happy to assist you.

It sounds like your computer isn't automatically switching the audio output to your headphones when they are plugged in. Here are some simple steps to help you resolve this issue:

    1. Check the Sound Settings

    1. Right-click on the speaker icon in the bottom-right corner of your screen (system tray).
    2. Select "Open Sound settings".
    3. Under "Output", you should see a dropdown menu. Click on it and see if your headphones are listed. If they are, select them.

    2. Manage Sound Devices

    1. In the Sound settings window, scroll down and click on "Manage sound devices".
    2. Under "Output devices", see if your headphones are listed. If they are, make sure they are not disabled. If they are disabled, click on them and select "Enable".

    3. Update Audio Drivers

    1. Right-click on the Start button and select "Device Manager".
    2. Expand the "Sound, video and game controllers" section.
    3. Right-click on your audio device (it might be listed as Realtek, Conexant, or something similar) and select "Update driver".
    4. Choose "Search automatically for updated driver software" and follow the prompts.

    4. Set Headphones as Default Device

    1. Right-click on the speaker icon in the system tray and select "Sounds".
    2. Go to the "Playback" tab.
    3. If your headphones are listed, right-click on them and select "Set as Default Device".

    5. Check for Audio Enhancements

    1. In the "Playback" tab of the "Sounds" window, right-click on your headphones and select "Properties".
    2. Go to the "Enhancements" tab and make sure that "Disable all enhancements" is checked.

    6. Use Lenovo Vantage

    1. Open Lenovo Vantage (you can find it by searching in the Start menu).
    2. Go to the "Device" section and look for audio settings. There might be an option to manage how audio devices are handled when headphones are plugged in.

If none of these steps work, it might be a good idea to contact Lenovo support for further assistance, as there could be a hardware issue with the headphone jack.

Please feel free to reach out if you require any additional assistance. I'm here to help!

Many thanks! I'll give a couple of these a try. my headphones don't show as output devices, but I'll update the drivers, (if I can :) ), and git the Lenovo Vantage a try.
