Scanner Twain driver for Windows 11 - or how to make Windows 11 allow custom sized paper in scanner

I'm running Windows 11. I have a Fujitsu Fi-5530C document scanner.

I want to scan some wiring diagrams that are longer than A3. Paper size is around 297mm by 479mm.

Despite setting the custom paper to 479mm long, Windows is only letting the scanner scan to 420mm long.

I went into Windows settings, and changed the standard paper from A3 to Tabloid, which is 430mm. So now I can scan to 430mm long whilst the scanner software (NAPS2) is set to 479mm.

Whilst Windows sees the scanner, I'm convinced that it's not fully set up. The Fujitsu Fi-5530C is from around 2005 perhaps, and so program software is for Windows ME and 7.

I have read that if I change from WIA drivers to Twain drivers, then it will work ok. I've tried installing modern Fujitsu Twain drivers, but Windows is blocking that. When I use the NAPS2 scanner program and search for the scanner as a Twain scanner, the program can't see it.

So how do I get Windows 11 to accept and use Twain drivers. Or, how do I get WIA drivers to accept none standard paper sizes to scan?

Thanks

And also -

Why does Windows group Printers and Scanners together, but then stop support/instruction for installing stand alone scanners?

On the thread that someone deleted, someone suggested that I run the scanner software in Compatibility mode.

I knew what the outcome would be, but ran it anyway.

Because Windows 11 has blocked the Twain drivers from installing, then the software couldn't see the scanner when changing from WIA to Twain.

So, just how do I get Windows 11 to allow Twain drivers install?

In Dec 2024, we transitioned from Windows 10 to Windows 11 (24H2) on a new PC at work. Connection problem with Fujitsu fi-6130dj scanner which worked in Windows 10. Installation of Windows 11 TWAIN driver from manufacturer was successful. The scanner was listed working in Device Manager but the scanner either did not show or showed as "WIA No Friendly Name" in any application. After some searching, I found the following instruction:

    https://fi-faq.pfu.ricoh.com/hc/en-us/articles/39468376902041-No-scanner-can-be-found-on-Windows-11-version-24H2-SX03047E

At the step: "{Select the device driver you want to install for this hardware] window and click [Next]", 2 entries of fi-6130dj showed. I chose the 2nd one and voila, the TWAIN driver AND WIA driver for the Fujitsu scanner were restored. Now both TWAIN and WIA show in all applications. Hopefully, the same process will fix scanners/multifunction machines of other brands. If you have only one driver listed in the last step, it's an easy choice. If you have 2 listings like mine, try one or the other to see which works. Good luck.

It's not just Fujitsu scanners that are affected. I am pretty sure that it is all scanners, and twain drivers, in general. None of the OEM's have a clue how to fix it. This seems like a typical Microcrap decision to force everyone to use the very limited Microsoft WSD drivers for scanners and printers and then only use the apps that MS "approves". Doesn't cause as many problems with printers, but it severely limits the scanner functions.

The reason no one at MS is relying, or taking this problem seriously, is because MS deliberately caused the problem.

Unless the OEMs find a solution, there won't be a solution.

I'm having a similar issue - I'm replying to see if I can bump up this issue so someone at Windows will finally reply. It's similar yet different - I am able to install TWAIN (and WIA) and I'm able to recognize the scanner somehow. I wish I knew exactly how so that I could answer y'all's questions specifically. But I am also trying to scan odd sizes of paper (many different odd sizes) and it is getting cut off. The simple answer would be to change the TWAIN scanner profile through the scanner software AND Windows control panel settings, however when I try to add or edit a new scanner profile, I get an endless spinning wheel of death. So I am wondering if, while installed and recognizable, Windows is still somehow rejecting this part of the TWAIN software? It's pretty frustrating as my scanners are a bit newer than 2005 - I have 2 fujitsu fi-7160's(2015) and 1 fi-7140(2013 I believe).

The next thing I am going to try is to install the latest TWAIN software for the newest fi- models, and see if I can get it to recognize my fi-7160's at least. It's definitely a hackjob method, but we'll see?
If anyone has answers to this, PLEASE PLEASE reply. WINDOWS WHERE ARE YOU

AND WHY CAN'T YOU GET ALONG WITH TWAIN DRIVERS WHY

    Kendall hi,

I just don't understand why Microsoft software is restricting it to a maximum of A3 in length, when these scanners can scan banners if neccesary.

But I do wonder if it's because Microsoft have linked scanners and printers as being the same thing - and of course they are not. They might both be part of the same machine in some cases, but they are as different in processing as sound and mouse control.

And my main issue is the refusal for Windows 11 to see the Twain for the Fujitsu, whilst happily accepting the Twain for the Brother A4 scanner.

And of course, Microsoft's Scanner App that they keep trying to get us to install is exceedingly limited in its ability and features.

    Mark
