We are in the medical industry and our users receive zip files that are password protected using AES encryption. How can I add support to the Windows File Explorer for AES encryption? We do not want to install third party apps like 7-Zip or WinRAR for this support. Is there an update to Windows 10, or an additional Windows component like PowerToys, that can enable the additional decryption methods for zip files?

    Dear EReedVC,

Thank you for reaching out to Microsoft Community Support.

Your inquiry regarding the addition of AES-256 decryption support for zip files to Windows 10 reflects a commendable commitment to leveraging native Windows capabilities while prioritizing security.

I understand the significance of your endeavor to avoid reliance on third-party applications, and I am keen to provide comprehensive guidance on this matter. Currently, Windows 10 does not natively support AES-256 encryption for zip files. While the built-in zip functionality in Windows File Explorer adeptly handles the traditional "ZipCrypto" mode, it does not extend its support to the more robust AES-256 encryption.

In reference to PowerToys, it is important to note that while this suite of utilities offers various enhancements for Windows, specific support for AES encryption within File Explorer is not presently available. Nonetheless, I encourage you to stay abreast of future updates and announcements from the PowerToys team, as they may introduce features that align with your esteemed requirements.

While acknowledging your preference to circumvent third-party applications, it is important to recognize that, at present, they represent the most viable solution for handling AES-256 encrypted zip files. Notably, applications such as 7-Zip or WinRAR are widely utilized and trusted for this purpose.

In parallel to your pursuit, consider providing feedback directly to Windows development team through the Feedback Hub app, emphasizing the importance of integrating AES encryption support for zip files within Windows File Explorer. Microsoft places great value on user feedback, utilizing it to prioritize feature development and enhancements.

Given the specialized nature of your industry, it is worthwhile exploring enterprise-grade solutions or support channels through Microsoft. I recommend engaging your IT department or a designated Microsoft representative to explore enterprise-specific options or custom solutions tailored to the unique needs of your organization within the medical industry.

If you find yourself in need of further assistance or clarification on any aspect of this process, please do not hesitate to reach out.

    Best Regards,

Martin | Microsoft Community Support Specialist

Thanks for the response. Is there an external website way of accessing the Feedback Hub? For security reasons the Feedback Hub App is removed from all machines throughout the organization and there's no way to re-add it. Is there a website I can use to send feedback to the Windows development team?
