Bitlocker: What's the difference between Password and Recovery Key?

Today, I installed Windows 11 using a new disk. My disk has a partition for data. I had turned the BItlocker on it off. When I turned it on again, it asked me for a password (or smart card) to unlock the drive. I entered a password. Now I see both Password and Recovery Key in Control Panel:

What are the differences between the Password and Recovery Key? Do I need both in order to decrypt should I need to move the drive to another PC?

If I don't need both then why are there two different "keys" in the first place?

Yes, you can use the key instead of the password by clicking “More Options - Enter Recovery Key” below the password entry box.

So please make sure you back up your key in a safe place, if you lose it, you may lose your data forever.

    Hello, I'm here to help.

The key is really related to the encryption process through which you can decrypt the encrypted data. However, the key is difficult to memorize.

The password is used to unlock your hard disk for everyday use.

When your computer hardware is changed, the password will become invalid and you will have to enter the key to recover it.

For example, when your device is stolen, the thief may try to remove the hard disk and install it on another computer to read it. He will have to enter the key, which is impossible for him.

Thanks. Does it mean that if I have forgotten the Password, I can use the Recovery Key to unlock too?

Bitlocker usually defaults to locking your hard disk after a computer reboot, at which point you will need to use a password to unlock it.

Thanks, but what is "everyday use"? How often do I have to use the password to "unlock" the disk?
