Secure Connection Failed; I'm at the end of my rope.

For no reason that I can determine my internet has decided to stop cooperating. My computer says it has connectivity and all troubleshooters find no issues. However, any page, on any browser, that I go to that requires a log in can not connect. I would attach screenshots but I also can't get those to work here so I will provide the exact wording of the error for the three browsers I have.

Firefox:
Secure Connection Failed

An error occurred during a connection to mail.google.com.

  • The page you are trying to view cannot be shown because the authenticity of the received data could not be verified.
  • Please contact the website owners to inform them of this problem.

Chrome:
This site can’t provide a secure connection

mail.google.com sent an invalid response.

  • Try running Windows Network Diagnostics.

ERR_SSL_PROTOCOL_ERROR

Edge:
The connection for this site is not secure

mail.google.com sent an invalid response.

ERR_SSL_PROTOCOL_ERROR

Things I have tried:

Reset computer, router, and cable modem.

System time matches.
Browsers/drivers/system/antivirus updated.
Addons/extensions disabled.
Cookies/cache cleared.

SSL State cleared.

Disabled Antivirus/Firewall.

Disabled DNS over HTTPS

Incognito/Private browsing.

Hosts File.

Disabled QUIC Protocol.

Not using VPN or any proxies.

Antivirus/Malware scans.

In addition, using Windows Powershell (Admin) I input the following commands in the listed order:

ipconfig /release
ipconfig /renew
ipconfig /flushdns
Netsh winsock reset
net localgroup administrators localservice /add
fsutil resource setautoreset true C:\
netsh int ip reset resetlog.txt
netsh winsock reset all
netsh int 6to4 reset all
Netsh int ip reset all
netsh int ipv4 reset all
netsh int ipv6 reset all
netsh int httpstunnel reset all
netsh int isatap reset all
netsh int portproxy reset all
netsh int tcp reset all
netsh int teredo reset all
Netsh int ip reset
Netsh winsock reset

Finally, all other computers and devices in the household on the same network are working just fine. Only my laptop is having issues. Mine only works when connected via ethernet and immediately stops when on wifi. I don't know what else to try and every help thread only suggests things I've already done or are referring to a PR_END_OF_FILE_ERROR issue which I am not having. What else can be done?

    Hello, Vmmph

    Welcome to the Microsoft Community.

Hello, thank you for sharing the information, it seems that you have encountered a network failure problem.

I understand your feelings, this is really bad, thank you for your feedback information, from your feedback information, you are right, the problem should indeed be on your computer.

You seem to have made some attempts so far, thank you for your feedback.

You can first update the NIC driver of your computer, you can go to the official website of the computer brand to download, or you can press win+x to select Device Manager to open, find the NIC driver, right-click and select Update.

After that, follow these steps to reset your computer's network Settings:

    A. Reset the network

    1. Search for CMD to open the Find Command Prompt (, run in administrator mode)
    2. In the command box that is displayed, enter the following commands (after each line is run, enter the next one).

    ipconfig /release

    ipconfig /renew

    ipconfig /flushdns

    ipconfig /registerdns

    netsh int ip reset

    netsh winsock reset

    netsh winhttp reset proxy

    1. Restart the computer and check whether the fault is rectified.

    B. Reset network Settings

Click windows+R key, enter inetcpl.cpl, open Internet options, click Advanced, and check "Use SSL 3.0", "use TLS 1.0", "use TLS 1.1", "use TLS 1.2", restart the computer after application. See if the problem is resolved.

    C. Reset the proxy server Settings

Click the windows+R key, enter inetcpl.cpl, open Internet options, click Connect, click LAN Settings, check whether the proxy server column is checked, if yes, please uncheck, and click OK, restart the computer after application, check whether the problem can be solved.

    D. Change the DNS

    1. Press the windows+R key and enter ncpa.cpl
    2. Click the name of the network you are connecting to, open the Network status window, click Properties, and double-click Internet Protocol Version 4(TCP/IPv4) in the Network Properties window.
    3. Manually set the DNS server to 4.2.2.1 and 4.2.2.2, and then restart the computer to check whether the fault is rectified.

I had already tried updating my drivers, but your comment on checking the computer brand's website prompted me to do a little more poking around and I discovered the issue. My computer model is no longer supported and so as far as the system knew it had fully updated drivers. I searched for the wireless card by name and was able to discover that newer models of my computer had a more up to date driver. After installing that driver the issue was resolved and so I did not try the additional steps you mentioned.

Thank you very much for your help and insight. I never would have thought of checking for drivers that way.
