Windows 11 in its infinite wisdom (NOT) as decided that my current driver –31.0.101.5382 - is the most current and will not allow the driver you suggest, even when I download it to my computer.
Is there anything else you can suggest?

"I have a Lenovo ThinkPad X1 GEN 8 running Windows 11 Pro.
I
can set my display settings only use the extended monitor, and it works when I do it.
However, if I unplug the monitor for my computer and then plug it in later, both monitors display, my computer and external monitor, when I only want the external monitor to display.
There was an old posting (https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/all/display-settings-not-saving-with-multiple-monitors/e7f447b1-9ea6-4c81-a2e6-52da1bd97a1d) that was not relevant because I have the latest drivers for my display adapter (an Intel Iris Xe)
Anyone have any ideas?

I don't think this could be a “By Design” issue, because I have another Windows 11 PC that does not have the problem.
In addition, there is no need for this, since when there is no external monitor, the PC screen displays. Plus, if the PC is plugged into the external display (when I have selected only the external display to show) and I turn off the external display, but then disconnect it, the PC screen comes back on. The risk you describe does not exist.

Hi
Welcome to the Microsoft community.
This situation is likely a “By Design” issue. To ensure that the laptop has a display when there is no external monitor, and not completely turned off, it may lead to your current situation. Therefore, in this case, it is recommended that you reset it every time you reconnect. At the same time, it is suggested that you press Win+F to feedback your needs to Microsoft’s developers and wait for them to add relevant features.
Best regards
