Sudden and unwanted switch from Word 10 to Microsoft 365

I use Windows 10. I like the normal Word program on Windows 10 and I use it for everything. Suddenly, every time I open a document it doesn't open with the usual WORD box, but with 'Microsoft 365'. The tools at the top of the page are different, and they are more primitive than the options in normal Word.

It does not matter that ALL my documents are saved to my computer or pen-drive as normal Word documents. They open as Microsoft 365 and I can only work using the Microsoft 365 toolbar for documents.

I DO NOT WANT THIS. I don't have the 'save to cloud' option turned on. I have gone so far as to delete Office 365 from my computer in the hope of just getting back to the word processing program I'm used to and that I want to use. Nothing works.

I've been on several of your help pages, and followed the instructions there to stop documents being saved as 365 format. Nothing works.

I can no longer even OPEN documents in the normal Word format that I want to use. It's like suddenly my computer killed normal WORD and replaced it with Microsoft 365. I hate this. Even if I'm offline it opens documents in 365. Why did it suddenly change so I can't use ordinary Word anymore? I did not ask for or initiate this change. I want my word processing to go back to normal, to what I always use: just WORD in Microsoft 10. NO Microsoft 365 ever.

I'm ready to totally subscribe from OneDrive and all paid Microsoft products just to try to get my word processing program back to normal Word. I am absolutely NOT USING One Drive. I have never liked it or chosen to use it. If I have received documents from someone using Microsoft 365 I have always saved them as normal Word documents and worked on them in that program. I DO NOT LIKE the Microsoft 365 interface for word processing AT ALL and NEVER want it to appear on my computer. How do I get back to opening documents in normal, Word 10?

On 14 Jun 2024 I experienced a similar loss of Word 10, with any attempt to open a Word document

already saved on my computer being met with a screen saying 'Updating Microsoft 365 and Office, Please

wait a moment.' After a delay, I receive a screen saying 'The application was unable to start correctly

    (0xc0001420)"

I feel the same as you: that the Great God Microsoft may have used its access into users of its software

to poison certain functions, even though they were originally paid for, or free. This smacks of an invol-

untary conversion by Microsoft of purchasers of its purchase-and-use programs to a subscription-based

service. which provides MS an ongoing revenue stream.

I can only hope that future litigation will restore my access to my Word files. At worst, some of them may

have been received, and the recipients might be able to print and return, relatively recent distributions.

I have the same question. On Nov. 14 there was a Windows update. Now (Nov. 16) all of my MS Office programs appear to be Microsoft 365. I purchased MS Office 16 at Best Buy on June 6, 2016. When I click the link you provided to CF_2007 above, it shows that I have MSOffice 16, purchased on June 6, 2016 but there is an Install button. Do I have to install my original software in order to override MS 365 or am I able to use MS 365 without additional payments?

The same thing happened to me. Where is my Microsoft Word that I bought with my laptop. I do not want 360. I thought 360 is a subscription. Does that mean that I have to start paying a subscription fee?

How do I get my Microsoft Word back?

Hi, I am Dave, I will help you with this.

    1

Is the original Word application you previously used still installed on your PC?

if it is, please open that and provide a screenshot of that window.

    2

If you had another version of Word on your PC, where did you get the Office licence?

if you log into your Microsoft account on the link below, can you find you original Office licence listed there?

I can't send you a screen shot. It has disappeared! When I open Word, I don't get the old interface I used to have, but a grey interface that saves as Microsoft 365. If I open a document I created and saved in Word, it opens in Microsoft 365. I don't see the old interface no matter what I do. It's some new grey version, instead of the old blue version with different buttons and commands.

It's like Word has been erased from my computer, despite the icon being there in the start panel.

I bought the computer new and bought Word 10 when I bought the computer about two years ago. I think. Anyway,. everything was new and legitimately purchased at a computer store. I paid a subscription Microsoft for stuff that as far as I can tell I don't even really use, since I just want basically a word processor and to use the internet. Just suddenly now when I open any document in Word, it looks like this instead of what it used to look like:
