Importing videos from iphone to PC, the date of importing is now the "date taken". How do I keep the original date taken with the video file?

When importing video files from my iphone to my PC laptop (Windows 11) through USB cable, the original dates of when the video was taken is automatically changing to the date of importing. Sometimes I can go in and change the date and other times the photos app does not allow me to change the date on the video file. How can I prevent this from happening? Is there a program I need to use to make the iphone video more compatible with Windows software?

Hello Allison, sorry about your problems. My name is Marco and I will do my best to help you.

Recent iOS videos use the HEVC codec by default.

Installing the HEVC Video Extensions from the Microsoft Store might help preserve the original date when transferring videos.

You can find it here: https://www.microsoft.com/store/productId/9NMZL...

After restarting the photos app the videos are transferred with the correct date.

Hello. Apple_devices Is the app that is on the MS_Store. The only program that I know of that edits the "meta-data" is exif OR Gimp. To be honest I am glad that the photos are transfering over. I also wanted you to know that it is possible to use a compatible external harddrive and connecct it via USB and try to transfer the photos that way as well. Do keep in mind the hard drive should be NTFS/FAT32/FAT/ect as a compatible Windows formatted drive if you wish to read the drive from the Windows computer.

Thank you for the suggestion, I purchased and downloaded that app, and it seems to be working to transfer videos with the correct date staying intact now! However, I'm noticing a new problem now. Pictures that I have saved on my phone (sent to me from another phone through text message) are now losing the original date when transferred to the laptop. These pictures seem to be transferring with random dates. Is this also something you can help me with?

I would suggest that you use linux and get a small copying program called fuse-zip to copy files from android. The reason why I suggest linux is because both android and linux depend and "see" the date modified of either a folder or file during copy and move operations. This way linux will use the date modified the same way that android uses date modified when copying files so there is consistency this way.
