Why does my snipping tool recorded video have no sound? Can I still recover the said unsaved video without sound?

Good day! I recently recorded a lecture class using the snipping tool for videos. I used the same screen recording method on a recent class and it worked well. However, this time, no audio was recorded throughout the whole video.

What could be the reason for this in order for me to avoid doing it the next time?

For context, there are some things I did which might have affected the audio recording and I just want to know if such case is really the reason: first, I had two windows opened during the recording on split screen, one is the meeting and the other is a jamboard; second, I started the recording prior to inserting my earphones to the headphone jack; and lastly, the lecture was more than an hour long and the saving process might have been affected by my lagging laptop.

Moreover, I would also want to know if there is any way I could recover the recorded file that has an audio (for the last case mentioned) and what process should I follow for this.

Thank you and sorry for the inconvenience.

Hi, I am Dave, I will help you with this.

Click the 3 dots at the top right of the Snipping Tool and select Settings

Scroll down the settings, is this setting enabled - ''Include System audio by default when a screen recording starts'.

It is not possible to recover a recording that was not successfully saved.

This default setting is set to on. The snipping tool recorded video and sound yesterday, but not today. video only. tried 2 times.

I was having the same issue and found a fix that worked for me. Snipping tool and Xbox Game Bar seem to both only look at your default output device for sound. I was using a TV as my default, but a headset for the game I was trying to record, and even with audio enabled, the videos would end up mute. Setting the headset to default device worked.

If you inserted a new audio device mid presentation, that might have caused it, since the recoding seems to be very specific about where the audio comes from. Hopefully that helps.

i have the same issue. I tried to record a meeting and did the recording twice. The first time i made sure to check by asking a classmate if he could hear me. I stopped the recording and went back to check that specifically the video and audio were working. They both were. Then i started the second recording, thinking that it would go well, but around the ending i noticed that the system audio was muted and i did not have the ability to unmute it. I tried clicking on the sign saying to unmute it, but it was grey and not an option. I did have an earpiece on during the start of the 2nd recording and during most of the meeting, but had to take it off. Even then i made sure that system ausio was recording. I got carried away, as it was a meeting that took most of my focus, but at the end i saw that the system audio was mute. The meeting lasted for about 2 and a half hours and i missed the audio recording for the most important parts....

After trying to find out the settings as to why this could have happened, i went into Gaming in the Settings and found that the max recording length was set to 2 hours... could this be why i missed such a big part?

My box is checked, as is "include microphone input", but when I go to record, the microphone icon has a line through it. This just started happening with the last Windows 11 update from the week of 7/1/24. Any other suggestions to get the microphone icon to be on? Clicking on it does nothing at the top of the Snipping Tool record screen, it's also greyed out.
