External SanDisk SSD Unlocker does not open (or it takes 5-20 minutes)

Hello community

I just got new laptop Asus Proart 16 (2023) with fully updated Win 11 Home and I have issues with loading my external SSD. It just takes unreasonably extended periods of time. I have tried the same SSD on my old laptop and had no issues at all. I have tried to connect it via USB and USB c on my new laptop, same story all along. What can I do to make it run?

Best regards

Jan

    Hello Jan

I had the exact same issue as you on a new Asus Zenbook 14, but I found the solution!

Windows Smart Control was in Evaluation Mode. I disabled it and the lag between executing the unlocker and the windows user control pop up immediately vanished.

    Hi Jan,

    Welcome to Microsoft Community.

I'm Hahn and I'm here to help you with your concern.

It sounds like you're experiencing a compatibility issue between your SanDisk SSD and your new Asus Proart 16 laptop. Here are a few steps you can try to resolve the problem:

    1. USB Port and Cable: Try using a different USB port on your laptop. If you're using a USB hub, connect the SSD directly to the laptop instead. Also, ensure you're using a USB 3.0 or higher cable for optimal performance.
    2. SanDisk Firmware Update: Check if there's a firmware update available for your SanDisk SSD. Manufacturers often release firmware updates to fix compatibility issues.
    3. Reinstall USB Drivers: Go to Device Manager, uninstall the USB Root Hub and USB Host Controller drivers, and then restart your laptop to automatically reinstall them.
    4. Disk Management: Check if the SSD is recognized in Disk Management. Right-click on the Start button, select Disk Management, and see if your SSD is listed. If it's listed, make sure it has a drive letter assigned.
    5. Disk Cleanup and Check Disk: Perform a disk cleanup and check disk (chkdsk) on your external SSD to ensure there are no file system errors or corrupted data. To do this:
      • Open a Command Prompt as administrator.
      • Type chkdsk /f X: (replace X with the drive letter assigned to your SSD) and press Enter.
      • Follow any prompts to schedule a disk check for the next system restart.

Disclaimer: Running chkdsk can check the file system and file system metadata of a volume for logical and physical errors. To avoid any trouble for you, do not cancel or interrupt chkdsk, and back up important data.

If the issue persists after trying these steps, you may want to contact both Asus support and SanDisk support for further assistance. They may provide specific solutions or firmware updates tailored to your hardware.

I hope this helps.  If there is anything not clear, please do not hesitate to let me know.

    Your Sincerely
