4k monitor showing 1920 X 1080 due to windows laptop

I am running a windows 10 Hp Spectre from 2017. It has Intel HD Graphics 620. I connected the laptop to the monitor via the Hp type C to HDMI adaptor. The monitor is a 4k monitor.

When I opened the advanced display settings and select the 4k monitor output, the highest resolution I can get under "List all modes" is 1920 X 1080. It says dekstop resolution is 1920 X 1080 and Active signal resolution is 3840 X 2160. I use screenresolutiontest.com to confirm that the monitor output is 1920 X 1080 when i am duplicating my display and 2560X1440 when I extend my display. How can i get my monitor to display in 4k.

The graphics card is capable of outputting 4k and so is the type c to hdmi adaptor. I used a different newer laptop and was able to get 4k output on the monitor using the same Type c to HDMI adaptor.

I have already updated the graphics 620 driver.

Can I force a 4k output with CRU.

Update with screenshots.

In this case, you will need to perform a custom installation of the driver and uncheck the option "Execute Clean Installation". You can see how to do it at this link.

When i try to install using the link you provided, i get the following error. Is there another way to update driver? I also tried to install latest driver through HP website but the version shown on the HP website is 21.20.16.4664 Rev.B from 2017 while my version of Graphics driver is 24.20.100.6344 from 2018 which is newer.

The outdated version of the graphics driver is probably the cause of the problem. Downloading and installing the latest version of the graphics driver (31.0.101.2128) from the Intel website at this link should fix the problem.

I have updated the post to include the screenshots. The adaptor is Hp usb c to hdmi adaptor "831118-001". Its capable of 4k 30Hz. I have already reduce refresh rate to 30Hz but the 4k options does not show. Additionally, I have tested the adaptor on a seperate laptop and the monitor displays in 4k so the adaptor is not the issue.

Hi, I'm Robinson, and I’m happy to help you today.

Usually, this problem is caused by a corrupted or outdated driver. Please provide some more details to help identify what is causing this problem. What is the model of the USB-C to HDMI adapter?

Also, attach a screenshot of the System Information Page:

1-Right-click on Start then click on Run

2-Type: msinfo32 and click on Ok

And a screenshot of the version of the graphics driver installed:

1-Right-click on Start then click on Device Manager

2-Click to expand the Display adapters

3-Right-click on the graphics driver and click on properties

4-Take a screenshot of the General

5- Go to the Driver tab and take a screenshot

You can see at this link how to include a screenshot in your post.
