Trouble with latest cumulative windows July 2024 update KB5040442 on Windows 11 Pro

Hi,

I have an issue with kb5040442 windows update. It appears to install OK, machine restarts, no post errors, boots into windows, I enter my PIN, it opens a session and I get a swirling circle as if its tidying up the install then the screen goes black except for the cursor which moves with the mouse and is not frozen. I managed to uninstall the update using CTRL-ALT-DEL, getting into task manager and creating an administrator task wusa /uninstall /kb:5040442 all the time the rest of the desktop was black only the task manager window was visible and operable. After restarting my pc boots into windows no problem and desktop is visible and functions normally.

There were a number of .net updates that were installed at the same time as kb5040442 but they are not the issue because the only update I uninstalled was kb5040442. This is the first time I have experienced this with a cumulative Windows 11 update was wondering if anybody else has the same issue? I did do a sfc /scannow scan after restart it showed no corrupted files

I'm having issues with startup after this update set. It gets hung up on the BIOS loading screen.

"nice" to hear I'm not only the only one to stop up-dates and frequently install/re-install KB5040442
how to push Microsoft for a change?

I'm having the same issue. Microsoft needs to look into the matter as soon as possible. I'm getting tired of uninstalling this update and pausing updates altogether. Even wushowhide.diagcab tool can't hide this update.

Hi, good day! I'm John and I'll be happy to assist you today. I know this has been difficult for you, Rest assured, I'm going to do my best to help you.

I recommend reporting the issue through the Feedback Hub app to notify Microsoft.

    https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/sen...

Once uninstalled, I recommend using the “Show or Hide Updates” troubleshooter to hide the problematic update. Windows Update won’t install hidden updates. Run the troubleshooter then please try to hide the Cumulative Update (KB5040442) that will show in the list. You may try restarting your pc if it helps.

    Hi John,

In the end I decided to download the update from the microsoft catalogue and try manually installing the update, that worked first time. No idea why my AM5 gaming PC was having trouble. The update installed with no issues on my other AM4 work PC.
