I get random packet loss spikes in all games I play on my pc. I have figured out that it's not my internet. While playing games like Fortnite, the game will run smooth for a little bit and then all the sudden my packet loss spikes to 30% then goes back down eventually. Sometimes my game completely freezes. I've looked up so many possible things trying to fix this but I haven't found anything that works. Someone please help!

Hi Heidi, thanks for reaching out. My name is Bernard a Windows fan like you. I'll be happy to help you out today.

I understand the issue you have, there is nothing to worry I am here to help, have you noticed any changes before the issue starts? and have you tried using a different network, just to check if the issue is on your internet while waiting for your response, let us do basic troubleshooting steps by following the steps below:

First what we will do is enable WWAN and WLAN services, these services are essential to run the Wireless and wired connection perfectly.

    • Open Services (Press Windows key + R then type in services.msc then click OK)

-Look for WLAN Autoconfig and WWAN Autoconfig> Right-Click Properties and set it to automatic (If it's already set to automatic, right-click then click stop then start it again)

    -Restart the PC and check

If the issue persists, run the following command in Command Prompt (Admin). Follow the steps below to do so.

These sets of commands will reset the internet connection and re-calibrate the internet settings you have.

    Press Windows Key + X.

Click on Command prompt (Admin) or Windows Powershell (Admin)

Type the following commands, and hit Enter after each command:

netsh int tcp set heuristics disabled

netsh int tcp set global autotuninglevel=disabled

netsh int tcp set global rss=enabled

    netsh winsock reset

    netsh int ip reset

    ipconfig /release

    ipconfig /renew

    ipconfig /flushdns

Once done, restart the PC and check.

    Method 3. Do clean boot:

A “clean boot” starts Windows with a minimal set of drivers and startup programs, so that you can determine whether a background program is interfering with your game or program.

    • In the search box on the taskbar, type msconfig and select System Configuration from the results.
    • On the Services tab of System Configuration, select Hide all Microsoft services, and then select Disable all.
    • On the Startup tab of System Configuration, select Open Task Manager.
    • Under Startup in Task Manager, for each startup item, select the item and then select Disable.
    • Close Task Manager.
    • On the Startup tab of System Configuration, select OK. When you restart the computer, it's in a clean boot environment.

Let me know how it goes and I hope that helps.

    Dear Heidi P1

Thank you for posting in the Microsoft community.

The occurrence of random packet loss spikes can stem from a number of reasons, and the following provides possible solutions to some common problems:

    1. Update the network adapter driver

Make sure your network adapter driver is up-to-date. You

can go to the motherboard manufacturer's website to download the latest network card driver.

    2. Check network settings

Disable and re-enable the network adapter.

Make sure no VPN or proxy server is used.

Try to change the network interface and try to use a wired connection instead of a wireless connection.

    3. Optimize network settings (Please skim if already tried.)

Try the following commands to optimize network settings:

Press WIN+S and type cmd - right click to run as administrator

netsh int tcp set global autotuninglevel=normal

netsh int tcp set global rss=enabled

netsh int ip set global taskoffload=disabled

    4. Windows autotuning TCP(Please skim if already tried.)

Disabling Windows TCP autotuning may help reduce packet loss.

Press WIN+S and type cmd - right click and run as administrator

netsh interface tcp set global autotuning=disabled

    5. Checking system resource utilization.

When packet loss occurs in the game

Open Task Manager (Ctrl + Shift + Esc) to check the system resource usage. Check if there are other programs calling a lot of network/CPU/GPU resources.

For example, browser, WindowSoft auto-update, background network data transfer of third-party download programs.

    6. Check for interference from other devices

Check to see if other devices in your home are doing high-traffic transfers, such as downloading or online streaming. These may affect your internet speed.

    7. Network adapter power settings

Make sure your network card is not automatically turned off by the system due to power management.

Open Device Manager and locate your network adapter.

Right click on the network adapter and select "Properties".

Click on the "Power Management" tab and uncheck the "Allow computer to turn off this device to save power" option.

    8. Router Firmware Update

Sometimes a router firmware update can solve many network problems.

Check your router manufacturer's website to download and update the latest firmware for your router.

    9. In-game settings

Try to lower the in-game network settings.

Check the server selection for the game and make sure you have selected a server with low latency.

    Best Wish

I'm sorry if the steps didn't work. It seems that the issue is more complex than I expected, Let's ask our colleagues if they do have ideas and fix for this.
