I keep getting STATUS_ACCESS_VIOLATION and STATUS_BREAKPOINT while browsing and DWM keeps crashing

I'm using an Alienware M18 - Windows 11 Pro on an i9-13980,  NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4090 with 64GB RAM, and as stated in the title, I keep getting STATUS_ACCESS_VIOLATION and STATUS_BREAKPOINT while browsing and DWM keeps crashing.

Here's what I've done so far.

  • Reinstalled display drivers
  • Removed all extensions in my browser
  • created a new profile in my browser, without any extensions or previous browsing data
  • created a new user account on the PC
  • disconnected every peripheral
  • ran sfcand DISM
  • reinstalled windows keeping apps and data
  • reinstalled windows using windows update
  • reinstalled windows by formatting the hard drive, switching from RAID 0 to AHCI mode (I got a BSOD right after Windows 11 23H2 installation and STATUS_ACCESS_VIOLATIONwhen I tried to look-up the error)
  • reinstalled Windows using the recovery partition and reverting to RAID 0 mode.

After all these, I'm still getting these errors in EVERY browser. Initially, I thought this was a chromium based problem but I'm getting it on chrome, edge, yandex, brave, opera and even firefox.

Then I get The Desktop Window Manager process has exited. (Process exit code: 0xc0000005, Restart count: 1, Primary display device ID: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4090 Laptop GPU)

I updated my BIOS and run any and every update available, I'm still getting these errors.

At this point, I'm very frustrated.

Can anyone help me before I end p smashing this computer like the infamous "bad day" video from the 90s. PS: I've even run memtest86 and got no errors. Run teh full Dell diagnostics and got no errors.

Sorry mate, it's your CPU. Read up on 13th and 14th gen intel i9s producing the same issue and the only way it gets fixed is by replacing the CPU. I know it's a laptop so that isn't really an option but maybe you can RMA.

    Hi,

The problem has been occuring for a while, I just thought it was a Chrome problem, till I decided to start using another browser which also started crashing on me.

Then the DWM errors also started.

I did just as you asked and I got these errors a few moments ago.

    Hello,Kobby Spiky Nkrumah

Thank you for posting in the Microsoft community.

Thank you for your detailed and patient description.

I see that your browser and dwm processes in the system global will cause STATUS_ACCESS_VIOLATION and STATUS_BREAKPOINT errors, indicating that this is likely related to your graphics card driver error. You have tried to format the hard disk and reinstall the system, which basically ensures that you are in a system environment that can run normally and stably. Based on the above information, we have basically ruled out system-level errors, and you need to further consider the graphics card and graphics card driver errors.

    • I understand that the i9-13980 motherboard you are using comes with an integrated graphics card. I would like to ask you to test the scope of the problem first. Open the "Device Manager", disable and uninstall the driver of your independent graphics card RTX 4090 in the "Display Adapter" list, and use the integrated graphics card to run your system. How long ago did the problem occur? Did you perform any changes such as system updates, deleting or adding specific process applications, BIOS updates, etc. before it occurred?

If you do not get crash errors after disabling the independent graphics card, you need to contact the official technical support of the graphics card. As the graphics card manufacturer, they can further provide you with other testable driver versions that support hardware work.

After you refer to the above steps, you can share some information in this thread and I will answer your questions further. Thank you for your understanding and cooperation!

    Best Regards,

    Hello,Kobby Spiky Nkrumah

I noticed your feedback that your problem is still not solved after updating the driver and disabling the solo display, and since you have reinstalled your system, I don't think there is any problem with your system, also I noticed that you are a whole computer, I think there is a hardware failure in your computer, and I suggest that you contact your computer manufacturer for a complete overhaul, and you may be able to locate and fix the problem once and for all.

I wish you all the best!

    Best Regards,

    Rota|Microsoft Community Support Specialist
