I've recently reset my pc and upgraded to Windows 11. Now most of the fonts I can look at are really thick and hurt my eyes.

This is what it looks like to me: https://prnt.sc/ncLbMpnlWHav

This is what it looks like on my w11 laptop, or how I'd want it to look: https://prnt.sc/j2ahbgb93xRE

PC: https://prnt.sc/kjE3NwkMHcPr

Laptop: https://prnt.sc/-UHryP-ZcJb6

https://prnt.sc/-UHryP-ZcJb6ThisThis happens even if I switch from chrome to microsoft edge, both browsers with the default font settings.

I've tried turning on cleartype and the issue persisted.

Hello, silvercola22,welcome to the Microsoft Community.

Thank you for your feedback. Based on your description, it seems you're experiencing a blurriness issue with the font.

Can I ask if you're noticing this problem outside of the browser as well?

From the screenshot you provided, it looks very much like the effects after running ClearType. If you can, please run ClearType multiple times until the display looks normal again.

Also, you can go to the Edge address bar and type edge://settings/system to access the performance settings page. There, you can turn off hardware acceleration and see if that improves your visual experience.

I hope this information helps you.

If the fonts are different, please go to edge://settings/fonts in Edge and adjust the custom fonts until you're satisfied with the result.

As you can see our HTML is exactly the same: Same site, same text

https://prnt.sc/DpEsltpj3PjHAlsoAlso edge://settings/fonts only allows changing the font size, the cjk fonts in my screenshots are clearly the wrong weight and lacking anti-aliasing.

Both screenshots of the japanese text I sent are taken with the same monitor on the same browser with the same text settings and font, just different computers.

    I've also tried:

    • Restoring font settings to default
    • Reinstalling every single font on my computer through drag and dropping 200 TTFs and replacing
    • GPU driver update/DDU
    • The "fix problems using Windows Update" option
    • Reinstalling the Japanese language in Windows
    • sfc /scannow

The next step I will try in a few days is a reset of Windows 11 then a downgrade to Windows 10 in case that doesn't work, but before that do you think I can exclude a faulty GPU from the equation?

Thank you for your reply. If ClearType isn't working for you and you don't have this issue in Windows, it's likely a problem with the font itself. You might want to try clicking on the settings in the top right corner of Edge, then go to More tools, and find Developer tools.

In the developer tools, open the select element button, then hover over the blurred element with your mouse to check its font settings and see if they're the same as the ones displayed normally.

If the fonts are different, please go to edge://settings/fonts in Edge and adjust the custom fonts until you're satisfied with the result.

Some clearer examples using cjk fonts (latin characters are bolder while cjk characters are thinner)

Hello and thank you for your response. The problem doesn't happen outside of the browser.

The person in this post seems to have resolved the issues with a Windows reinstall but I'd like to consider that a last resort.https://www.reddit.com/r/chrome/comments/m44g1d/chrome_ignores_cleartype_at_all_why/

I ran the ClearType tool around 5 more times specifically selecting thinner text to try and get rid of the problem, but it seems that Chrome and Edge are just completely ignoring ClearType rendering. For example, disabling ClearType does not even affect Chrome in any way. The text on the File Explorer/Windows menus does however get exceptionally ugly when I disable ClearType so it works there at least.

I tested and confirmed the problem on Chrome, Edge, Vivaldi, Opera, and Brave so I really don't think it's a Chrome issue or anything. The only browser where my text is rendered nice and thin is Firefox, but it's obvious that particular browser is bugged as well because sometimes the text gets so thin you can count the pixels.

I've tried disabling hardware acceleration and the result was the same.
