File Explorer Search Filtering

Hello All,

I have a user as well as me when I do search in my File Explorer the Filtering while in a search. In my attached example I am searching my OneDrive for "JAN" and then wanting to filter it down to only shout Outlook Item, but when I press Outlook Item it reverts back to my OneDrive Whole. Attaching screenshots and a short mp4 or the issue, trying to help a customer as he has a lot of documents, he wants to make Windows Explorer filter better and if we are missing an option to turn on. I made a gif of the mp4 video and attached it.

Any help with a setting change to resolve this issue would be greatly appreciated.

    Hi, Andrew

    Welcome to Microsoft Community.

We understand that you have a problem searching for files in the file explorer. I tested according to the steps you provided, and found that I will encounter the same problem as you. This is essentially because the file resource manager adopts the logic of fuzzy query, but it can't retrieve irregular file types, such as custom file types. To solve this problem, there is an alternative at present, that is, when you search for files by keywords, first enter the complete keywords, then filter the file type, then delete the file suffix of keywords in the search bar, and then filter the file type again, so that you can select the files you searched.**For example, if you want to search JAN.outlook, you can enter "JAN.outlook" in the search bar completely, and then follow the steps in your GIF to filter the file type. You will find that you can't select the file. At this time, change the keyword to "JAN" in the search bar, and then re-filter the file type, so that you can successfully select the "JAN.outlook" file you want.**You can give feedback on this issue through  Feedback Hub, and the Microsoft development team will review the proposal of this issue and gradually improve and enhance the user experience in subsequent versions. You can share the feedback link with us after submitting your feedback, and we will vote for you.If you have any questions, you are welcome to visit us at any time.

    Hi, Andrew

    Thanks for your reply!

There is no detailed Microsoft Explorer search list yet. For individual special files, you can put .extension at the end and search directly according to the solution I provided before.

For the folder search method, you can try to select the type in the file type first, and then try to search.

For example, if you want to search for the "Test" folder, you only need to select the "Folder" type in the file type, and then search for "Test" in the search bar.

This method can also be used to search for specific files. If you think the first search method I provided is too complicated, you can use this solution as an alternative.

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact us.

    Best Regards

I appreciate the help and I believe that if I just swap around my searching like doing a file selection and then do the search.

    Hello Nicholas,

Is there a list of search terms for Microsoft explorer or is it most just put the .extension at the end?

Example to search file folders what would that be? As my user mainly wants that or like doc files?
