HP Spectre x360 Convertible – Model 13-ae052nr – Won’t Boot – Fault with Windows or BIOS, how do I tell?

My HP Spectre x360 Convertible won’t boot. I originally had Windows 10 and I believe I have updated to Windows 11. When I turn it on I get the black HP screen with the little circle turning at the bottom – which can go on for hours. This started after I replaced the fans and was turning it on and off repeatedly to check that the fans were running.

I ran a disk check on the hard drive and it seems OK. I’ve created Windows bootable USB flash drives and if I try to repair I get nowhere. I also tried to “install” which started off fine but when it restarted it went back to the black HP screen with the spinning circle – even though the USB is still connected and USB is first on the boot list.

I was able to start it with an Ubuntu bootable USB and was able to back up the hard drive onto an external drive.

The odd thing is that the bootable Windows USBs only seem to work once if I put them in a second time it seems to ignore them even though I’ve told it to boot from the USB. If I boot to Ubuntu in between then I can use the Windows USB again. Also at times “boot from USB” has not shown up on the boot menu. Initially I assumed the problem was with Windows but now I’m wondering if it could be the BIOS – although I have not seen any BIOS error messages. I did a Hard Reset and a CMOS reset and performed a manual BIOS recovery [WIN + B keys] – none helped. I’m thinking about reinstalling the BIOS with a USB flash drive but before I do I thought that I’d see if anyone has any ideas about this. Thanks

Some computers don't recognize the bootable flash drives created by the Microsoft Media Creation Tool correctly. You can try to re-create the bootable flash with a third-party tool called Rufus and then check if you will be able to proceed with the Windows installation.

    • Using another computer

Step 1: Download the Windows ISO. You can download the Windows ISO at this link.

    https://www.microsoft.com/software-download/win...

Step 2: Create the bootable USB

1-Download and execute the Rufus app

    https://github.com/pbatard/rufus/releases/downl...

Watch out for ads on the site that may advertise products frequently classified as a PUP (Potentially Unwanted Products). Thoroughly research any product advertised on the site before you decide to download and install it.

2-In the Device, select the flash drive that you want to use

3-Then click on the Select button and select the Windows ISO download in the previous step

4-Then make sure that all other options are like in the image below and click on the Start button

    5-Wait until finished

Step 3: Change the boot settings

    1-Enter on Bios settings

2-Set the "USB Diskette on Key/USB Hard Disk" as the first boot option under "UEFI Boot order"

3-Press F10 to save the change and exit

4-Then your computer should boot from the flash and you will be able to proceed with the Windows installation

I hope this information helps. If you have any questions, please let me know and I'll be glad to assist you further.

Thanks. This is very helpful. I had read about Rufus but I thought that the Microsoft tool would work better for Windows. I will try Rufus and let you known how things turn out.

    Robinson,

Thanks for responding, I appreciate your help. I have created the installation media with the Microsoft Media Creation Tool. I've attached the screen shots you requested -- I had to take photos with my phone. I had previously reset the boot order to load the USB drive first. I assume that changed back to the default when I reset the BIOS. Thanks again.![](https://learn-attachment.microsoft.com/api/attachments/769385d1-0427-4aea-b3b1-d366c69f73fc?platform=QnA"https://learn-attachment.microsoft.com/api/attachments/db3f73ba-62b5-478c-8b92-c181e216aed1?platform=QnA" title="filestore.community.support.microsoft.com" rel="ugc nofollow">

Hi, Frank. I'm Robinson, and I’m happy to help you today.

Please provide some more details to help identify what is causing the problem. How did you create the installation media? Did you use the Media Creation Tool or a third-party tool?

Also, please attach a photo of the first screen of the Bios settings and a photo of the boot settings screen. You can see at this link how to include a screenshot in your post.
