Windows 10 missing necessary driver after recent update

My Dell laptop (Win 10 upgrade on a used Win 7 device) recently did an update and now I'm unable to start Windows. Blue screen says a necessary driver is missing and to start the device I need to install the driver, etc.
Problem is, I have no recovery disc, and can't access the recovery disc on the HDD (if any).
I'd be just as happy to do a reboot back to factory settings, but, again...I'm unable to proceed past the blue screen. Actually, I'd probably prefer going back to Win 7. That was the last good OS Microsoft released, IMO.
Accessing boot options asks if I want to use the HDD or a CD. The HDD is a no-go and I have no CD. I tried downloading Linux onto a flash drive, but it won't boot with that. Do I need to burn it to a CD?
What do I need to do? Buy a new Win CD? I'm hoping I can fix it myself without taking it to a shop, but I'm not very tech-savvy.
Any help appreciated, but please...keep the instructions simple enough for a Boomer to follow.
Thanks in advance.

    Dear Ray,

Thank you for your prompt response, and I'm delighted to hear that progress is being made with the troubleshooting steps.

On the screen, you should see an option labeled "I don't currently have a product key." Please select this option. If you encounter any uncertainty or need further guidance, feel free to take a picture of the screen and share it in your reply.

Your patience and cooperation throughout this process are greatly appreciated.

    Best regards,

    Dear Ray Pruett,

Thank you for providing the details and the photo of the error message. The error code 0xc000000f typically indicates that a required device isn't connected or can't be accessed, which often points to issues with the boot configuration data.

Let's address this issue with a step-by-step approach to restore access to your system. I'll keep the instructions as clear and straightforward as possible.

Step 1: Create a Windows 10 Installation Media

First, we need to create a bootable USB drive with Windows 10 installation media. You can do this using a working computer:

    1. Visit the Microsoft Download Center and download the Media Creation Tool.1. Run the Media Creation Tool and select Create installation media (USB flash drive, DVD, or ISO file) for another PC.
    2. Follow the prompts to create a bootable USB drive. Ensure your USB drive has at least 8GB of free space. Step 2: Boot from the USB Drive

Now, let's boot your Dell laptop from the USB drive you just created:

    1. Insert the bootable USB drive into your Dell laptop.
    2. Turn on your laptop and immediately start pressing the F12 key repeatedly until the boot menu appears.
    3. Use the arrow keys to select the USB drive from the list and press Enter. Step 3: Repair Your Installation

Once you've booted from the USB drive, we'll use the recovery tools to attempt a repair:

    1. Select your language, time, and keyboard preferences, then click Next.
    2. Click on Repair your computer at the bottom left of the screen.
    3. Select Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Repair.
    4. The Startup Repair tool will attempt to fix any issues with the boot configuration. Step 4: Use Command Prompt for Advanced Repair (If Needed)

If the Startup Repair tool does not resolve the issue, you can use the Command Prompt for additional commands:

    1. Access Command Prompt: Go to Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Command Prompt.
    2. Rebuild the Boot Configuration Data (BCD): Type the following commands one by one, pressing Enter after each: bootrec /fixmbr

    bootrec /fixboot

    bootrec /scanos

    bootrec /rebuildbcd

    1. Restart Your Computer: Close the Command Prompt and select Continue to exit and restart your computer. Step 5: Consider a Clean Installation

If none of the above methods work, you may need to perform a clean installation of Windows 10:

How to: Perform a Custom Installation of Windows 11 and Windows 10 or - Microsoft Community

    1. Boot from the USB drive again as described in Step 2.
    2. This time, select Install now instead of Repair your computer.
    3. Follow the prompts to install Windows. Note that this will erase all data on your hard drive, so it's a last resort if other methods fail. By following these steps, you should be able to diagnose and potentially resolve the issue with your Dell laptop. If the problem persists, or if you feel uncomfortable performing these steps, I would recommend seeking help from a technical professional or contacting Dell support for further assistance.

Thank you for your understanding and cooperation. Please let us know if you have any further questions or need additional help.

    Dear Ray Pruett,

    Welcome to the Microsoft Community

I understand the frustration you're experiencing with the error on your Dell laptop. Let's work together to resolve this issue and get your system running smoothly again.

Based on your description, it seems there might be a misunderstanding. Typically, a missing driver wouldn't cause the system to fail to boot properly; instead, issues like these could indicate a deeper problem, such as a corrupted hard disk or a fault in the system boot process itself. These issues usually require technical expertise to diagnose and resolve effectively.

To better understand the situation, could you please provide details or even a photo of the specific error message or screen you're encountering? This will help us assess the severity of the issue and provide you with the most accurate solution possible without needing to send your laptop for repair.

Additionally, if you're attempting to boot Linux from a USB drive and encountering difficulties, ensure the USB drive is correctly prepared as a bootable device. You typically don't need to burn Linux to a CD; creating a bootable USB drive is more common. Use a reliable tool like Rufus to create a bootable USB drive from the Linux ISO file. Once done, access your laptop's boot menu (often accessed by pressing F12 during boot) and select the USB drive to boot from it.

Thank you for your patience and cooperation. I look forward to receiving the requested information so we can assist you further.

    Best Regards,
