Laptop won’t display anything, how do I fix this?

I closed my laptop earlier today and did not power it off. When I returned to my laptop a couple hours later it was not displaying anything and the screen was off despite the light of the power button showing and the fan moving.

I force powered off my laptop and turned it on to come to the automatic repair screen. The laptop could not automatically repair anything and so gave me advanced options. I tried every single option, even resorted to re-setting my laptop but keeping my files but still this did not work as it said it failed to do so. Whilst on a search for more options I may have accidentally pressed something on my laptop because it shut down and powered on by itself. It is now in a constant restarting phase showing me a lit but black n screen, fans running, and power button light on. It just keeps restarting itself.

Hi Welcome to Microsoft community. Based on the symptoms you've described, it sounds like you may be dealing with a hardware issue, potentially related to the display or the motherboard. Here are some troubleshooting steps you can try:

    1. Forced Shutdown and Restart:
      • Try to force a shutdown by pressing and holding the power button for 10-15 seconds until the laptop turns off completely.
      • Once it's off, wait a few seconds and then try to power it on again.
    2. Check Display Connections:
      • If the laptop has a removable display, try gently disconnecting and reconnecting the display cable.
      • Ensure the display cable is properly seated and secured on both ends.
    3. Disconnect and Reconnect the Battery:
      • Turn off the laptop and remove the battery (if it's removable).
      • Wait for a minute, then reinsert the battery and try powering on the laptop again.
    4. Perform a BIOS Reset:
      • If you can't access the BIOS, try to reset the BIOS to its default settings:
        • Locate the BIOS reset jumper or button on the motherboard (consult your laptop's manual for the location).
        • Carefully short the BIOS reset pins or press the BIOS reset button for a few seconds.
        • This will reset the BIOS to its default settings, which may help resolve the issue.
        • Disclaimer:  Microsoft provides no assurances and/or warranties, implied or otherwise, and is not responsible for the information you receive from the third-party linked sites or any support related to technology.   If you are going to modify BIOS Settings, please back up all your personal files first to ensure you do not lose data.
    5. Try an External Display:
      • Connect an external monitor or display to your laptop using the appropriate cable (HDMI, VGA, etc.).
      • If the external display works, the issue may be with the laptop's built-in display.
    6. Seek Professional Assistance:
      • If none of the above steps resolve the issue, it's likely a hardware problem, such as a faulty display, motherboard, or other internal component.
      • In this case, it's best to contact the laptop manufacturer or a qualified repair technician for further assistance.

It's important to note that if the laptop is continuously restarting, it may indicate a more serious hardware issue. Avoid forcing the laptop to shut down repeatedly, as this could potentially cause further damage.

Let me know if you need further assistance. Best regardsDerrick Qian | Microsoft Community Support Specialist

Have you tried an external monitor?

Please use another computer to create a bootable USB drive containing the Windows installation. This USB can then be used to run repair tools on your affected computer.

You will need an empty USB with at least 8GB of space and a working PC.

You can create using the media creation tool, download it on this link(Create a USB device with an installation image): https://www.microsoft.com/software-download/win...

How to Create Windows 11 Bootable USB Installation Media: https://www.elevenforum.com/t/create-windows-11...

    On your affected PC:

Insert the USB(Windows 11 Bootable USB Installation Media)

Go to BIOS/UEFI and change to boot from the USB device.

On the installation screen click on "Repair your PC" in the left bottom.

Click on Troubleshoot > Advanced Options > Try all the available options. Thank you.

Hi this did not work as I cannot access the BIOS on the laptop. The display does not react to any keys, just keeps showing lit up but black screen.

    Dear Shimona Pinto [ed20sp],

    Welcome to the Microsoft Community

Thank you for reaching out about the issues you're experiencing with your laptop. I understand how frustrating it can be to encounter a situation where the screen remains black despite indications of power.

Based on the information provided, it appears that your computer's system image and system files may be corrupted, exacerbated by the ongoing reboot cycle. To address this issue effectively, I recommend following these steps:

    1. Back up your data: It's crucial to safeguard your important files first. You can do this by removing the hard drive from your laptop, connecting it to another functional computer, and backing up your data using a hard drive caddy or a direct connection.
    2. Reinstall the operating system: This involves creating a USB installation media on a properly functioning computer. Once prepared, you can initiate the installation process by booting from the USB drive and reinstalling the operating system. For detailed instructions on creating installation media, please refer to this link.

If these steps do not resolve the issue and your laptop continues to cycle through restarts without displaying any visuals, it may indicate a more complex hardware malfunction. In such cases, I strongly advise seeking assistance from a certified technician for further diagnosis and repair.

I hope these recommendations prove helpful in resolving your current issue. Should you have any additional questions or require further assistance, please do not hesitate to reach out.

    Best Regards,
