Any fixes to lag/ping spike while playing online pc games?

I've been experiencing lag/ping spike lately and I'm not sure what's causing it. My ping is great outside of playing online, but when I do it spike every so often. I haven't had this issue since building my PC back in 2019. I've stumbled across multiple articles stating to check the Wi-Fi drivers. When I checked I noticed multiple drivers that weren't being used, so I deleted them. I hope I didn't make the matters worse by doing so, but after deleting them the issue was still present. I also got a new Wi-Fi USB adapter to see if that would change anything, but still nothing. I also noticed the lag spike were more terrible when I would play certain games. Any advice or insight would be greatly appreciated.

* I mostly play League of Legends and that's where I would notice the most of the lag. Other games would be FPS games like Halo, Call of Duty, and Helldiver's 2 etc.

    Hello, DisgruntledCasual

    Welcome to the Microsoft Community.

Hello, thank you for your feedback on the problem, it seems that you are experiencing delays and ping spikes while playing online games.

I will provide you with some basic internal computer repair troubleshooting steps to help you with the repair:

    1. If you're using Wi-Fi, try using an Ethernet cable to connect your computer directly to the router. Wired connections typically offer lower latency and a more stable connection than wireless connections.
    2. Update the network driver:

Make sure your network drivers are up to date. Outdated or broken drivers can sometimes cause connection problems. Go to the motherboard or network adapter manufacturer's website to download the latest drivers.

Follow these steps to reset your network environment:

    A. Reset the network

    1. Search for CMD to open the Find Command Prompt (, run in administrator mode)
    2. In the command box that is displayed, enter the following commands (after each line is run, enter the next one).

    ipconfig /release

    ipconfig /renew

    ipconfig /flushdns

    ipconfig /registerdns

    netsh int ip reset

    netsh winsock reset

    netsh winhttp reset proxy

    1. Restart the computer and check whether the fault is rectified.

    B. Reset network Settings

Click windows+R key, enter inetcpl.cpl, open Internet options, click Advanced, and check "Use SSL 3.0", "use TLS 1.0", "use TLS 1.1", "use TLS 1.2", restart the computer after application. See if the problem is resolved.

    C. Reset the proxy server Settings

Click the windows+R key, enter inetcpl.cpl, open Internet options, click Connect, click LAN Settings, check whether the proxy server column is checked, if yes, please uncheck, and click OK, restart the computer after application, check whether the problem can be solved.

    D. Change the DNS

    1. Press the windows+R key and enter ncpa.cpl
    2. Click the name of the network you are connecting to, open the Network status window, click Properties, and double-click Internet Protocol Version 4(TCP/IPv4) in the Network Properties window.
    3. Manually set the DNS server to 4.2.2.1 and 4.2.2.2, and then restart the computer.

You can also check your router Settings at the same time to ensure that quality of Service (QoS) is correctly configured. QoS Settings can prioritize gaming traffic over other types of Internet traffic, reducing latency spikes.

You can try it out by referring to the steps above, and after that, give some feedback and I will further support you.

    Best regards
