Forced to change PIN, no internet exhausted a ton of options

Hi guys,

Before you say "there is a thread like this already" please understand I have tried many different solutions and others don't apply to me.

I got almost all the new components on my computer except my storage.

CPU: Intel Core i7 14700k

GPU: Nvidia 4070 TI

Motherboard: MSI Z790 TOMOHAWK WIFI

RAM: CORSAIR VENGENCE RGB 32 GB DDR5 6000

I kept my SSD that has Windows 11 (Home?)

Problem 1

It boots up to log in, where I am told I need to change my PIN because of security settings changed in the BIOS. Click "here" to change. My computer has no access to the internet, and the internet is required to change the PIN.

What I've Tried

  1. Hooking up the ethernet directly to the modem/router
  2. Using WiFi USB Adapters (two different brands)
  3. Using the MSI-provided WiFi antennas screwed into the back of the MOBO

I believe the internet is not being recognized because it does not have the proper drivers. I can't update them without the internet.

Problem 2

The other solution I have found is to change settings on your computer via various boot options to bypass the PIN.

What I've Tried

  1. Bootup into safe mode (brought back to the main login screen with PIN error)
  2. Bootup into safe mode with networking (brought back to the main login screen with PIN error)
  3. Bootup with hidden admin profile (brought back to the main screen with an error informing me I need to restart, kicking me out of admin)
  4. Renaming the NGC folder with the command prompt (Does nothing and am brought back to the main login screen with PIN error)
  5. Removing the NGC folder with the command prompt

There are only two solutions I have yet to try.

  1. USB to ETHERNET adapter
  2. Completely reinstall Windows 11 via USB thumbdrive.

I'm going to try the USB to ETHERNET tonight, but I have seen this not work for a lot of people. I am very hesitant to reinstall Windows 11 as I have a ton of programs that would be deleted that take up about 1 TB of storage. My internet is not strong so it would take a long time to reinstall everything.

Any ideas?

    Arthur,

Thank you for your help. Although those solutions did not work, I was able to download the wifi driver to a USB thumb drive, open CMD through troubleshooting, and used the CMD to open windows explorer which allowed me to access the driver that was installed onto the thumbdrive. Directly after install I got internet and I was in business.

    Thank you for your help!

    Hi, CullenFeagin

    Welcome to Microsoft Community.

I understand that you are having trouble on need to change your PIN, but currently the computer does not have access to the internet and you have tried very many things. Your solution ideas and mind are great and I understand how you feel.

I'll give you some other options to hopefully solve your problem.

1、Please try to open the mobile phone hotspot, through your device to connect, to see can make the computer into the network state.

2、As stated in the description of your problem, you can try to enable the computer to access the internet and change the PIN by adapting the USB port to Ethernet.

Please note: Please wait for a few moments before recognizing the network, sometimes the network icon may not change but you will still connect to the network successfully.

3、Please try to restart your computer and enter BIOS to disabled TPM.

    The steps are:

    (1) Reboot your computer

    (2) Repeatedly press the Del key (Delete) on the keyboard while the computer is booting up.

    (3) Find the Security option in the BIOS setup screen.

    (4) Find TPM Configuration and click on it.

    (5) Find TPM Device or similar option and set it to Disabled.

    (6) Save and exit the BIOS

    (7) Reboot your computer.

Please note: The steps may vary depending on the version of the motherboard, you can find the matching steps on the official website of the motherboard brand.

Disclaimer:  Microsoft provides no assurances and/or warranties, implied or otherwise, and  is not responsible for the information you receive from the third-party  linked sites or any support related to technology.   If you are going to modify BIOS Settings, please  back up all your personal files first to ensure you do not lose data.

If you disable TPM successfully, you should be prompted to please log in with your password after restarting your computer, so good luck!

I sincerely hope that the above solution will solve your problem.

We look forward to hearing back from you.

    Best Regards
