It began to be so with my computer recently: When shutting down, a notification flashes once and then the computer shuts down: "Closing 1 app and shutting down. windows_edb_devicenotify. This app is preventing shutdown."

    Hi Tat, This is Ramesh.

Windows.edb is the Windows Search index. Please see if resetting the index resolves the issue.

Open "Indexing Options" in the Control Panel. Click "Advanced" and click "Rebuild".

    Hi Karl,

The Windows Search service creates the Windows.edb file, which is always in use when Windows is running. It sounds like the Windows Search service is not shutting down correctly. But let's check whether there is a background process having the window title Windows.edb.

Before shutting down the computer, open an admin Command Prompt and run:

    "tasklist /v | clip"

    Press Enter.

You'll see no output in the console window because the output is copied to the clipboard.

Open Notepad and paste the output (Ctrl + V) from the clipboard.

In Notepad, look for "edb" entries, especially in the Window Title column.

    Also, open "services.msc".

    Double-click "Windows Search".

Click "Stop" and set its Startup type to "Disabled".

Restart Windows and see if that works.

    Hi Ramesh,

I have already done: Open "Indexing Options" in the Control Panel. Click "Advanced" and click "Rebuild".

But the case remains the same: (C) When shutting down, a notification flashes once and then the computer shuts down: "Closing 1 app and shutting down. windows_edb_devicenotify. This app is preventing shutdown."

I would like to ask the following questions:

Q1. Does the case C imply that windows_edb_devicenotify is working in the background whenever my computer is on?

Q2. Is it by default that windows_edb_devicenotify is working in the background whenever my computer is on?

If the answer to Q1 is yes and that to Q2 is yes, then I would like to resolve C, and I would like to ask, if I do not resolve C, will there be any serious consequence to my computer?

If the answer to Q1 is yes and that to Q2 is no, then I would like to retrieve the default setting and resolve C. How?

(I suppose that the logical combination is not real, that the answer to Q1 is no and that to Q2 is yes. If my assumption is wrong, please correct me!)

If the answer to Q1 is no and that to Q2 is no, then I would like to ask, if I do not resolve C, will there be any serious consequence to my computer?

I am looking forward to your answers and instructions (if applicable). Many thanks!

    Kind regards,

    Karl

    Hi Karl,

It should be listed in the classic view in the Control Panel.

    (or)

    Please click Start, type "indexing".

In the search results, click Indexing Options.

    Dear Ramesh,

Thank you for your prompt reply. But I cannot find Indexing Options in Control Panel. The Windows version of my computer is Windows 10. Where is Indexing Options in Control Panel?

    Kind regards,

    Karl T. L. Ip

Control Panel > System and Security, > Network and Internet, > Hardware and Sound, >Programmes, > User Accounts, > Appearance and Personalisation, > Clock and Region, > Ease of Access.
