Touchpad not working consistently on Win 11 - I2C HID Device not working

I have an HP Pavilion x360 14-dy1097nr. With Windows 11 the Elan I2C touchpad frequently stops working, which causes the mouse pointer to completely disappear. When it stops working, in the Device Manager the 'I2C HID Device' usually has a yellow exclamation point and the Device Status says "This device cannot start. (Code 10). A request for the HID descriptor failed". If I drop into the BIOS, the touchpad works so I know the physical device is working.

Sometimes a reboot fixes it, sometimes it doesn't. I did a full reset of Windows 11 this week. I tried updating the driver (10.0.22621.2506) & BIOS (F.23) but that didn't help. I even tried uninstalling the driver to let Windows reinstall it. "sfc /scannow" in the command prompt does not detect any integrity violations. I've tried reading lots of suggestions on the web but nothing helps.10.0.22621.2506

I've seen some posts with a link to an ftp.hp.com softpaq driver but they don't seem to match the touchpad I have as the installer says "Device Not Connected". Downloading the drivers from the hp support page for my PC result in an installation error of "The driver is not supported on this OS version (10.0.22631)"

Product name : HP Pavilion x360 Convertible 14-dy1xxx

Product number : 54P41UA#ABA

BIOS : F.23-10/25/2023

OS: Win 11 Home 23H2 (build 22631.3880)

Any thoughts or advice? Thank you so much for your help!

    Hi ,

I am Ivan, I will help you with this.

Well being and your driver but in your case you would try to install it manually when running it arrives in the folder that will be extracted in the location C:

    https://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp147001-147500/...

Access the device manager > select Human Interface Device > I2C HID > Update Devices > Browse my computer for the driver > Let me pick from a list of drivers > have disk > C:\SWSetup\SP147316\dchu_\1ETDHCF.inf or PTPFilter.inf.

    Hey Ivan,

I'm facing the same issue. I followed your guideline and installed sp147316 manuelly but it did not solve the issue.

An error occurs during installation and the device can't be started. Code 10

    Further suggestions?

    Thx

    Emma

    Hello Ivan,

Thanks for the quick and helpful response!

Before I had a chance to try your instructions for installing the driver manually, Windows Update installed KB5040527. With this KB installed, today is the first time in as long as I can remember that the mouse driver didn't crash. I don't know if it's due to the KB or just a lucky day. So that I don't change two variables at the same time, I'm going to keep testing the old driver with this new KB to see how well it works. Then I'll try your instructions for manually updating the driver. I'll post back here what I find.

    Thanks!
