My laptop keeps BSODing due to Riot Vanguard (vgk.sys)

Hello everyone,

I have been facing BSODs for last two months due to vgk.sys (Riot Vanguard, mandatory requirement to play League of Legends). The issue happens randomly when I am using my laptop.

I tried several ways to fix the issue with support from Riot but none of them worked (reinstalling Riot Vanguard, graphic drivers etc.). In the end, I decided to do a fresh reinstall of Windows and only install League of Legends (which automatically installs Riot Vanguard) to check if the BSODs were coming from an interaction between Riot Vanguard and something else on my laptop. Sadly, the crashes still continue on the fresh reinstall, making Riot Vanguard the clear culprit.

Riot Games is suggesting that this is an Intel CPU issue but my laptop runs through all the CPU benchmarks just fine even under exteme testing.

At this point of time, I am not sure what to do except for unstalling League of Legends. I would really like to continue playing the game but I am beginning to fear that it is harming my laptop. Any kind of advice to fix ths issue would be extremely helpful.

Below is my system information and the minidump is here for reference: 081724-17593-01.dmp

Hi Audrey, thank you for that information, it is still providing the same issue, seems that there is a compatibility issue between your device and the VGK, do you have a third-party anti-virus? if yes, I suggest uninstalling it and checking, however, if the issue persists, and since you have reinstalled Windows, I suggest contacting Riot Games support if they can provide you with a different version of their app or an alternative way since there is no problem with the PC itself.

    Hello again,

Thank you for your support. I implemented the solutions mentioned and my laptop continues to crash. I don't use VPNs or proxies and BIOS has been reflashed.

Here are the minidumps from the latest crashes:

    081724-10140-01.dmp

    081724-10109-01.dmp

One of the crashes was caused by ntoskrnl.exe and latest one was caused by vgk.sys (same error as earlier I believe).

Any advice that could help identify the core issue would be extremely helpful.

Hi, thanks for reaching out. My name is Bernard a Windows fan like you. I'll be happy to help you out today, my working hours vary & I usually reply between 10:00 pm & 6:00 am EST(UTC -5) Monday to Sunday.

I understand the issue you have, there is nothing to worry I am here to help, as per checking and analyzing the DMP file you have it is still an error with vgk.sys, this error in particular to your device happens when there is a conflict with the hardware and security of the PC, however, it should work fine with the specs you have, in addition, I suggest doing the following steps from the link:

    https://windowsreport.com/vgk-sys-blue-screen/

Note: This is a non-Microsoft website. The page appears to be providing accurate, safe information. Watch out for ads on the site that may advertise products frequently classified as a PUP (Potentially Unwanted Products). Thoroughly research any product advertised on the site before you decide to download and install it.

If you are using a VPN or Proxy server that can also be an issue, however, if all fails the last resort is to update the BIOS or do a BIOS Flash from your manufacturer's website as there might be security settings on the BIOS that is having a conflict.

Let me know how it goes and I hope that helps.

    Bernard
