I have a dell laptop with windows 11. I have 3 brand new scandisc flash drives, none of them appear in file explorer. The laptop makes a sound when the flash drive is connected/disconnected. In device manager the drive is in the usb section and shows “working properly” there iis also an unlnown device with a caution symbol. The device shows in disc manager but does not have a drive letter. I have tried uninstalling the device in devive manager and restarting, disc management will not let me assign a drive letter. I have run windows update, checked the drivers are ip to date etc. The drive works on my dell desktop without issues. I have other flash drives that work fine on the laptop. Any ideas?

Visit Dell support specific to your Tag# to update drivers & bios

Do NOT update drivers from any other source

Do you perhaps have a third party AV/Security that is blocking the usb?

    Solved it,

Reinstalled Windows 11 all fixed. Some corrupted files must have been causing the issue.

    Thanks for your help.

    Hi

Thanks for your help so far.

I’ve checked the drivers/bios etc with dell it was all up to date.

    Turned off fast start up

When I plug in the flash drive (I’ve tried all of the usb ports) two unknown devices appear in device manager, in the other devices list. They both say code 28 drivers not installed.

Also a usb mass storage device appears in the usb controller list this says it is working properly.

In disk management the flash drive shows as disc 1 without a drive letter assigned to it. It will not allow me to assign a drive letter to it I get a message saying that the operation has failed.

Hi, gareth. My name is Ivan, and I am an Independent Assessor. I'd be more than happy to assist you. I'm so sorry that you are experiencing this issue. Don't worry, I'll do everything I can to help you.

    • Do you know if the BIOS is up to date?
    • Have you tried different USB ports and different computers to rule out a hardware issue?
    • Have you formatted the flash drives?
    • Have you performed a virus or malware scan to rule out an intrusion issue?

Fast startup can sometimes cause problems with USB devices. Disable it in the Power Options settings.
