Laptop typing double accents for each stroke

I use the kind of layout where you press the accent key then the letter you want to accent.

For some time, every time I press the accent key my laptop writes two accents. This doesn't just create a second, annoying accent I don't need, it totally prevents me from assigning a letter to the first accent.

I know this is not a hardware problem. It concerns all accents, and the same keys function properly when I switch to a different layout where they are assigned different symbols. I also tried switching to another layout of the same type and deleting my current one, then restarted the computer. The new layout worked properly for a while. So I re-enabled my usual layout. It too was working correctly then. Both reverted back to printing double accents after a few minutes.

I am running the latest driver on an Asus. All updates have been installed.

No idea how to proceed.

    Hi all!

I also experienced the exact same issue. I exhausted all the options such as Windows Defender, Malwarebytes, etc. until I used ESET NOD32, in which the bug has been fixed, and I was able to type accents again properly.

Try ESET NOD32 even with a free trial period. It works for me.

I have the same issue. This post never came to a solution and there has been no further replies that I can see since October. I have tried several antivirus programs to no avail, have reconfigured the default keyboard layout in settings, have done a clean boot. Nothing works, double accent character persists everywhere EXCEPT in Windows Explorer search box. It seems to be something that is loading during the boot process because for a couple of seconds after rebooting everything works fine, but 15 seconds later its back. I have created a new user account and THAT WORKS, but I have many customized layouts and settings in my original account which I would hate to loose if I have to start a brand new profile from scratch. Is there any expert from Microsoft listening?

In this case, perform a clean boot to see if any third-party program in the background is causing this behavior. Follow the instructions carefully.
    https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/topic/how-t...
If the behavior does not occur after a clean boot. In this same article, there is a technique to help you identify which program is causing this in "How to determine what is causing the problem after you do a clean boot".

After finding the cause or if it does not help, return to normal boot as instructed in "Reset the computer to start normally after clean boot troubleshooting".

I already used both, to no effect.

Hi. I'm David, and I'm happy to help you.

I usually see this behavior occurring due to malware actions.

I suggest you do a full scan using Microsoft Safety Scanner. Download from the link below.

    https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/securi...

Also, do a full scan using Malwarebytes as a second opinion.

    Download through this link: https://malwarebytes.com/

IMPORTANT: When installing, a 14-day trial will be activated. I suggest disabling this trial to avoid conflict with your current antivirus. Access the Malwarebytes settings (gear icon at the top of the window), tab "Account" and click "Disable".

After scanning, you can uninstall it.

Feel free to ask back any questions.
