Cursor lag/stuttering when using iGPU in Windows 11 (possibly only under no load for explorer.exe)

Hello!

I faced with an annoying bug in Windows 11: when using integrated GPU (Iris Xe) the mouse pointer lags/stutters in Windows 11 from time to time. By lagging/stuttering I mean the pointer moves with low (or at least lower) FPS than the rest of the picture: please refer to first row on the attached image. While smooth movement is shown on the second row of the attached image. It also looks like that the bug occurs when there is no load for explrorer.exe process present.

Unfortunately, there was an error with image uploading. So here is the link: https://images2.imgbox.com/cb/4d/Y1dl6r0R_o.png

My hardware: a notebook with Intel Core i9 12900H CPU, 32GB of RAM, Intel Iris Xe and Nvidia 3050 GPUs.

So far, I found the following:

  1. The lag persists only if Iris Xe GPU is used. Everything runs smooth with Nvidia GPU.
  2. The lag won't appear while explorer.exe is doing something (e.x. performing file copy).
  3. The lag won't appear in Firefox or Chrome.
  4. The issue exists with a wired mouse, a bluetooth mouse (tried 3 different devices) and the touchpad.
  5. The issue persists no matter what screen refresh rate is set: 60 FPS, 120 FPS or Auto.
  6. It turned out that the issue only affects the mouse pointer and has no effect on the application/OS performance. I.e., applications work fine, it is just mouse pointer is laggy from time to time.
  7. I tried to capture the mouse pointer movement with Bandicam (screen recording software) but as long as I start the recording the mouse pointer stuttering immediately disappears no matter which codec or FPS setting (60/120) I choose. I thing this behavior is similar to #2.
  8. All the updates are installed.

My attempts to fix the problem:

  1. Driver update/reinstall doesn't fix the issue. I tried drivers from the vendor, the latest release and beta drivers from Intel and Nvidia. I used the DDU app to remove the drivers.
  2. Reinstalling Windows doesn't fix the issue. I performed a clean install (formatted everything); right after installation (before connecting to the Internet or installing anything else) I installed Iris Xe drivers and Nvidia drivers. After that the issue reproduced itself.
  3. Installing Windows beta version (v. 25314) doesn't fix the issue.
  4. sfc /scannow doesn’t fix the issue.
  5. Mouse trails are turned off.
  6. "Clean boot" doesn't fix the issue, but "Safe mode" does because it switches to Microsoft basic GPU driver, I think.
  7. I have changed enormous number of system parameters and their combinations. No luck.

I found a few "workarounds":

  1. Use Microsoft Basic driver, but loose brightness control.
  2. Force explorer.exe to copy files (the slower - the better, otherwise you have to restart copy procedure again and again).

Could somebody please help me identify and fix the issue?

Actually i am facing scroll stutters in 22624 build W11

    Nvidia driver 531.68

    GPU: 3060 Ti

    CPU 13600KF

Tried everything here, at the end the issue was the display zoom level set at 150%.

When set back to the recommended setting (100%), lagging/stuttering disappeared.

Seems like the issue was not my wireless mouse, but rather a Nvidia/Windows issue.

Thank you Genci - and NameHasBeenTaken bringing this issue to light !

I agree with Genci - that display zoom level is the root cause of this issue in my case.

I am using a brand new HP Pavilion Plus laptop with Intel Evo Core Ultra 5 125H processor, Intel Arc Graphics and no other dedicated GPU. OS is Windows 11 Home v. 23H2.

I use both primary laptop screen and a 4K external monitor at the same time. On either screen, if I use zoom level 150%, the cursor lag/stuttering occurs. The problem goes away if the zoom level is 100% on either screen.

Also, when zoom 150% is used, the cursor lag happens in different windows like Chrome browser and File Explorer but it does NOT happen if you just move your cursor on your static wallpaper without any window on top.

Obviously, it is a Windows issue.

Dear Microsoft, please fix this issue in the next Windows update. It is impacting so many of us. Thank you!

Hello!Exact same Issue here! Its been 9 m onths - where is your bug fix ?

Or are you gonna tell me that I spent 2000.- CHF on a buggy system and will have to play Windows System Engineer to try, to unbug Win11 OS myself? I'm busy, already have a Job, thank you!

I tried all of OPs Steps 1 - 6, multiple times, please dont tell me to update Bios, check my Device Manager or DISM please! No one having this specific Issue is a clueless piece of bread.

My mouse is lagging everytime I have both of my GPUS activated (which is system default). The activated Intel IGPU is annoyingly buggy, causing faulty mouse lagging and slow speed with no doable Solution so far.

Yes, already tried various OEM, INTEL and Windows Drivers for the IRIS XE on a fresh, clean system. They all lag.

If I deinstall Intel Driver (DDU) and deactivate Intel IGPU in device manager and just use NVIDIA T550 Laptop GPU, mousepointer and touchbar runs flawless, System is super exact and fast.

Only solution so far is to run system on dedicated GPU only - but with many downsides, as its not connected to my Display.

To have to manually disable lagging Intel IGPU everythime you need to activate the products marketed specs - is ridiculous, please provide a FIX - not a 25-Step-maybe-baby-solution-guide covering basic Layor 7 Errors for basic graphics bug.

    THANK YOU!

    Windows 11 Pro 64
Lenovo P 16s Gen 1, Intel i7 1260P, Intel IRIS XE IGPU, NVIDIA T550 GPU

    Thank you for you reply!

Regarding your suggestions. I have already tried these (they didn't work):

    1. Disable hardware acceleration in Windows and applications. Disabling hardware acceleration in Windows setting didn't work. And the is no stuttering while using browsers (Firefox, Chrome).
    2. Check for conflicts with other software. After a clean Windows install the first thing I did - was installing the GPUs drivers. Right after that the issue occurred. I don't think there are any conflicts with software present. I have checked - there are no exclamation marks next to any devices in the Device Manager and there are no errors in the system logs related to the GPUs drivers.
    3. Disable Windows Visual Effects. Tried. No luck.
    4. Check for BIOS and firmware updates. All the updates are installed, incl. the latest BIOS version. I am checking updates almost every day (the issue is really annoying).
    5. To toggle the scrolling inactive window settings. Did that. Also tried toggling off then on then off again (as some post in the Internet suggested). Didn't help.
    6. Disable Fast Startup. Did that (also in BIOS too). Didn't work.

    I haven't tried these steps:

    1. Disable Dynamic Tick.
    2. Disable Power Throttling.
    3. Disable Link State Power Management.

I am going to try them and report if that helped.

    -=UPDATE=-

I have tried the suggested solutions.

    1. Disable Power Throttling - didn't help.
    2. Disable Link State Power Management - I don't have the "Power Management" tab in the adapter properties.
    3. Disable Dynamic Tick. I have executed the command and monitored the current timer value using ISLC utility: https://www.wagnardsoft.com/content/Intelligent-standby-list-cleaner-ISLC-v1028-Released
      1. If I run Skype then the timer value decreases to 1 ms. and the stuttering disappears. Immediately after I close Skype the timer value goes up to 15.625 ms. and the mouse stuttering appears again.
      2. If I copy a large file using File Explorer then the stuttering disappears but the timer value stays at 15.625 ms.
      3. If I set the timer value to 1 ms. manually in the utility - nothing happens (i.e. the lag still persists).

It looks like the system timer has noting to do with the bug, but executing Skype or copying file(s) temporary fix the issue.

    this sounds pretty prevalent

i have a Dell Latutude 5440 laptop, Intel i7-1355U w/ iGPU, same issue.

i think the GPU driver guys are slacking and we're losing mouse responsiveness, maybe sacrificed for the sake of battery life? we as end-users want infinitely-responsive HID's.

i would suggest the lag verification be part of the windows drivers WHQL certification testing. in my case, both the Bluetooth mouse and the trackpad are equally not immediately responsive if not moved for even a second or so. i'm finding myself continuously moving the mouse or trackpad to ensure it's "awake" and responsive for when i'm about to actually input my next command. this is even when the device is on AC power.

it should be recording motion into a small input-buffer, and when the accessory fully-wakes, actually respond to that input buffer, but the way it's currently handled, there's a very obvious momentary unresponsiveness, in the order of .5-s or so, which is pretty infuriating input lag.

i don't know if anyone remembers the old ps/2 mouse ports, where eventually we had 2d graphics card hardware acceleration, circa windows 3.1, of mouse input. that was the saviour back then, but now the igpu driver guys with all their billions of transistors have forgotten the script and we're back to laggy, cpu-managed-response-like mouse input...

Hi I finally fixed my issue, it was the AMD graphics driver after all. Basically every driver, even on the OEM webpage ( I have an ASUS Vivobook PRO 15X M6501 ) except the earliest version would cause the mouse stutter.

It seems im locked into that driver, so i had to make a change in the registry to stop Windows Update from downloading any more updates.

Just so strange that any driver beyond the original would cause these problems, I hope AMD finds a fix to this issue soon but it seems unlikely because the driver im using now is almost a year old!

Or could this be an ASUS issue?

I should add that I did a complete rinse with AMD cleanup utility first before downloading the one im using now.

Edit: because of this I cannot use AMD Adrenaline software as it doesnt recognise the driver and downloading the old version Radeon Lite wont work as it seems to be have been discontinued.
