I’ve just bought a new laptop that I want to be able to use alongside my current pc, in the setup on my new laptop there is the option to restore from my last pc backup. If I do this, will I still be able to use the devices independently or will there be issues with future backups etc.?

    Hello, this is Emily.

    I will explain to you what this restore means, so you can hopefully make an informed decision if it is best for your user scenario.

    When you see this option offered to you, it means your old computer have OneDrive running. What can be transferred from the old to the new include:

    1. Your files in Desktop, Documents, Pictures folders - that is, if you have those folders set up to synced in OneDrive on the old computer.
    2. Some settings. This is not all settings, but some only. For example, it will remembers apps you downloaded on the old computer, your printer preference, or file explorer settings, etc.

    You can read more about them here: https://support.microsoft.com/en-au/windows/abo....

    ======================

    What this also means is -

    It will turn on OneDrive sync for your new computer. It will put your Desktop, Documents and Pictures folders into OneDrive on the new computer as well. So both computers will have common files synced to each other. When one file is removed or edited on one computer, such removal and edits will also happen to the other computer.

    =============

    If you are not sure if this is what you want, it is ok to do this later. This is not the only time you are allowed to opt in, so feel free to skip this for now and decide later.
