My Steam Games are Lagging After the Latest Update on Windows 11

I have recently cleared space on my hard drive, cleared my caches, run my disk cleanup, disk derangement/optimize drives, uninstalled and reinstalled drivers; as well as run memory diagnostics (mdsched.exe) etc. and nothing has fixed the issues. I am incredibly tech savvy and nothing I have tried has worked. I have the room on my hard drive to run this game (Baldur's Gate 3) and I have dropped the resolution on the game to a lower resolution in the hopes that this would also assist in correcting the issue. Nothing I have tried has worked after the most recent update on Windows 11 (2024-04 Cumulative Update for Windows 11 Version 22H2 for x64-based Systems (KB5036893) on 05/06/2024. I didn't have any issues of this type when I had computers running on Windows 10 or previous OS's such as XP etc.

It seems that I am not the only person who has struggled with this issue when it comes to Steam and Windows being disagreeable with one another. I am not sure what else I could do. I would love to be able to relax and play my game, however it appears that I am not able to do so. This seems inherently wrong to me. My computer is only two years old, I shouldn't be having these issues. I only began to have these issues when my computer did a hard update from Windows 10 to Windows 11 after purchasing it from Best Buy. I am seeking a resolution to this as I am very frustrated with the fact that I have done everything in my power and understanding to ensure my game could run effectively and yet it is still lagging, stalling and, freezing. I have checked to see if my firewall or anti-virus are getting in the way of my game and neither is.

So what can I do? Any enlightenment on this would be great. I would love to receive any feedback as I am truly lost as to what I can do at this point without factory resetting my computer and starting from scratch. Thank you.

I have the EXACT same problem!!! Had Helldivers 2 and dishonored 2 running smoothly on decent settings on my gaming laptop, and then boom, windows update and suddenly Helldivers won't work on LOWEST possible settings, short of me just shooting pixels like an arcade game from the 80s. What the heck is with that?

PLEEAAASE someone (microsoft) find a way to fix this, otherwise I wasted my money on a gaming PC that I can't game on, and will have to consider whether to continue using microsoft products long-term.

It might be worth checking if the update caused any changes in your graphics settings or drivers specific to Windows 11. Sometimes these updates can reset or alter configurations, especially with squishmallows intensive games like Baldur's Gate 3.

I'm sorry to hear you're having game performance issues. These issues can be unique to your specific device configuration, so we need a trace/recording of the issue to investigate. Please file new Game Performance feedback, with a recording, by following the instructions here: https://aka.ms/gameperffeedback

This is a rather interesting topic between Microsoft, Games, and Gaming platforms, "Steam", being one of several as it seems. Are gamers being cut off by using Microsoft?

I do feel for you as I build my own computers for extreme high-end performance, and I am seeing so many posts concerning problems with state-of-the-art hardware issues on a very broad scale!

I'm not going to advertise any hardware I use as not to create a bias opinion for others, but a build that was approximately $6,000.00 worth of tech for my new gaming computer and Windows 11pro won't run it?

Did I just waste 6 grand?

Also, why am I being forced to Windows 11 within the 4th quarter of 2025 when Microsoft is perfectly aware of the hundreds of issues due to this upgrade process?

I to would very much be open to know what is going to happen as far as solutions to these issues with non-compliant hardware, admin controls, performance, and such a short timeline in cutting Window 10 support.

Please, can anyone provide some good feedback concerning such future issues?
