When I start my computer, I have my search engine default to google. It keeps changing it to secure search. I know where the problem lies. It is in the PowerShell. When I start up my computer, I have to close all the PowerShell tabs to prevent it from changing my search engine. If I leave it, it will change my search engine. My mother has the same computer as mine, and it doesn't do it. My solution for now is to close the PowerShell tabs every time I start my computer.

Please run Farbar Recovery Scan Tool (FRST) and share your logs.

    https://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/farbar-recovery-scan-tool/

    • If your computer language is not English, rename FRST64.exe to FRST64English.exe.
    • Run FRST and press "Scan".
    • Two logs are created in the folder that FRST is run from, FRST.txt and Addition.txt.
    • Zip the logs and upload to OneDrive, Google Drive or any file sharing service and post the share link.

**If you are downloading FRST with Edge, smartscreen may initially block it.

Click on the 3 dots next to the warning and select Keep-> Show more-> Keep anyway.

    Thank you for the photos!

Please allow me to ask what happened after you attempted your first reply in the options?

Because it shuts down so soon after turning on makes me associate it with these scenarios (including the one in my first reply):

    (1) The window with PowerShell after booting up is very much like an automated script that PowerShell runs at startup and will execute and then change browser settings, leading to the scenario in the second picture. (This is very likely)

    (2) Since this is happening on both you and your current computer, it's very likely that the same third-party apps, plug-ins, etc. are on both devices, leading to the likelihood of the problem. So based on your pictures, I would highly recommend that you test Option 2 in my first reply when you have time, especially the steps on how to determine the problem after a clean boot.

    (3) Of course this software may not be malware and you and your mother use it a lot, but I think there is indeed a software or built-in script that runs automatically after booting up and changes the browser settings.

    Looking forward to your reply!

These are the pictures that I got for you. I have to take the first picture quick because it closes very quickly.

    Hi Alex_346

    Welcome to Microsoft Community.

Based on your description, I understand that your default search engine is Google, but it is constantly changed to Safe Search after booting. I understand your feelings very well!

May I ask that you provide a screenshot of this if you are comfortable with it? Because without screenshots it may not be possible to understand the situation better with just text, thank you very much!

Since you mentioned the PowerShell tab, it reminded me that there may be a script or third-party process that runs automatically in PowerShell that causes this to happen repeatedly.

I will give you some solutions and hopefully it will solve your problem successfully! However, this first reply may not be able to solve your problem due to the lack of information and the fact that it requires different aspects of troubleshooting, so please understand and provide me with more information (pictures would be great!) in your reply. Thank you very much!

Option 1: Please try creating a new local administrator user account and logging in first to see if you still experience the problem assuming we use a different user.

Click “Windows Logo Key” to open the search bar -> Type “cmd” in the search bar and open it with administrator privileges -> Please enter the following commands

    net user USERNAME PASSWORD /add

    net localgroup administrators USERNAME /add

Please note: USERNAME PASSWORD can be replaced with your preferred account name and password, if you don't need a password you can leave out the PASSWORD.

Option 2: Please check your startup programs to see if there are any scripts or applications that start up automatically.

    (1) “Windows Logo Key + R” open “Run” -> type “shell:startup” and open it -> in the startup folder, check if there are some scripts like PowerShell or suspicious applications. If there are, you can try to remove them.

    (2) Then check the Task Manager for any suspicious or unknown startup programs.

“Ctrl + Shift + Esc” to open Task Manager -> select ‘Startup apps’ tab -> check if there are any suspicious or unknown startup apps. If there are, please try to disable or uninstall them.

Option 3: Please try to start your computer cleanly. Since Clean Start uses only a limited set of files, drivers and services, it is suspicious and effective in troubleshooting the possibility of problems caused by third-party applications, drivers, third-party services.

You can refer to Clean Boot: How to perform a clean boot in Windows - Microsoft Support

After a clean boot, please scroll down to the page after the link to find “How to determine what is causing the problem after you do a clean boot”, which is a dichotomy that helps us to locate the service that is causing the problem.

Disclaimer: A “clean boot” starts Windows with a minimal set of drivers and startup programs. It helps to determine whether a background service is interfering with your game or program and to isolate the cause of a problem. These steps of "clean boot" might look complicated at first glance. However, to avoid any trouble for you, please follow them in order and step-by step so that it will help you get back on track.

Option 4: Please try to use different browsers with different kernels to see if the default search engine is tampered with for safe searches.

This will help us to further determine if the tampering may be due to malware, viruses, etc.

You can try Edge and Firefox, or Chrome and Firefox.

Edge and Chrome use the same version of the same type of kernel, so it is more scientific for us to try testing with browsers with different kernels.

I sincerely hope that the above solution will solve your problem. Please feel free to contact me if you have any problems or still can't solve them. (Photos related to the question would be great!).

I look forward to hearing back from you.

    Best Regards
