[SOLVED] Display/monitor runs on CPU instead of GPU
Hello, I heard that if you set your display/primary monitor to run on the GPU, which in this case is my GeForce GT 820M, it will improve overall performance and/or make the display refresh a bit better. The problem is that I can not make my display run on the GPU, I right click on my desktop, press NVIDIA control panel, go to PHYS-X configuration, below "Select a PhysX processor" I use the dropdown menu and select my GPU (GeForce GT 820M), then apply the changes. It will shows in the NV control panel as my display is running on the GPU, but when I right click on my desktop> Display settings>advanced display settings, it shows this:
The problem is that settings app says that the display for my laptop runs on the integrated graphics/CPU (Intel HD graphics 4600). I have no idea at this point, which app says it correctly, NV control panel says that the display is running on the GPU, and settings, which is the very built-in windows app, says it runs on the CPU/integ. graphics. Here's a screenshot of both: on an NVIDIA Optimus-powered laptop.
Optimus is designed to manage GPUs intelligently, and overriding its behavior can result in higher power consumption and shorter battery life.
- You could try, although it is not 100% reliable, that from the BIOS you can disable the integrated graphics or set the dedicated GPU as the primary display output.
- Enter the Device Manager.
Expand the Display Adapters section.
Right-click on Intel HD Graphics 4600 and select Disable device.
You should be careful because it can cause system instability.
In short, I would recommend that you do not alter the work of Optimus, since stability problems, power consumption and future wear of parts such as the battery of your laptop may occur.

2024-09-12T16:00:23+00:00 Hi, Aron. My name is Ivan, and I am an Independent Advisor. I'd be more than happy to assist you. I'm so sorry that you are experiencing this issue. My working hours vary & I usually reply between 09:00 am & 6:00 pm Monday to Sunday - (GMT-5).
The PhysX settings in the NVIDIA Control Panel are primarily concerned with how PhysX calculations (related to physics simulations in games) are handled. It does not directly control which GPU drives your display output.
NVIDIA Optimus technology automatically manages switching between Integrated and Dedicated GPU usage for optimal performance and power efficiency. However, you can control which GPU is used for specific applications:
- Right-click on your desktop and open the NVIDIA Control Panel.
Go to Manage 3D Settings.
Under Program Settings, you can add specific applications and choose the preferred graphics processor for each.
For demanding applications like games, select High-Performance NVIDIA Processor.
- Some games and applications have their own graphics settings within the software. Look for options to select the preferred GPU.
It is generally recommended to let Optimus technology manage GPU switching automatically. Therefore, it is best not to force it to work only with the dedicated GPU, and in your particular case, the integrated GPU handles the monitor control.
