I got a brown box icon of my files in dropbox - Windows 11

Hi,

After I got a new laptop and installed that with Windows 11, I got this brown box icon on my files in Dropbox. I didn't have this on my previous laptop with the same set up.

I use Onedrive for work document and Dropbox for image backup and private thing.

I have read some other treads that this is a Onedrive icon and nothing to do with Dropbox. https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/all/i-also-got-this-brown-box-icon-of-my-files-in/b440a1c2-6a47-4f8f-ab42-44ed9a59d1d4

I can confirm that both Onedrive and Dropbox is logged in correctly and reports no error.

Only files in Dropbox have this icon.

All my Dropbox files and folder is not backed up by Onedrive and I can't find any files or folder from dropbox when I log in to onedrive online (sharepoint.com in my case).

Do anyone have a solution for this?

Thank you!

    Hi,

I am on build 23H2 on Windows 11.

    It looks like this:

It is only in my Dropbox folder and only one files in every folder.

I don't have any issues with Windows Explorer or have this icon on Windows Desktop.

I don't have any experience with "files on demand", so I can't say that I have enabled that. Both Onedrive and Dropbox is default set up.

    Thank you!

Hello, I’m Virginia, a fellow user like yourself. I’m in the UK.

Sorry to hear you’re experiencing problems. May I ask which Windows 10/11 build are you running - 22H2 (Win 10/Win 11) or 23H2 (Win 11)?

I understand you’re having problems with a box icon on files/folders, Don’t worry as I’ll do my best to assist you today.

The box icon sounds like it could be a shortcut for ‘files on demand’ which is a OneDrive & Dropbox icon.

A brown box over your Windows Desktop icons can be caused by an issue with Windows Explorer.

To resolve the issue, restart Windows Explorer:

    Press Windows key + E.

Press CTRL + ALT + DEL and select Task Manager.

Select More details to show all the apps.

On the Processes tab, under Apps, right-click on Windows Explorer.

    Select Restart.

Hi and thanks for your time and answers.

The strange thing is that it is only files in Dropbox that has this, which is not backed up by Onedrive of my knowlegde :)

I can't toggle on or off "files on demand" in Onedrive:

I would still try the suggestions just in case. It may be files on demand was enabled by default, I would check that too.

I would also ensure that you’re signed into OneDrive, same with Dropbox.

The simple answer is that the icon indicate the file/s have been synced to the cloud - in this case Dropbox & OneDrive.
