I am using an old HP laptop running Windows 10. I have searched and tried everything I’ve found, I cannot get McAfee off my computer.
It’s constantly running, taking up memory and disk space, and ending the task in task manager does nothing. My computer is already using Windows Defender, bur McAfee just. Won’t. Close.
I can’t uninstall it through the app because the only thing I can open with it is McAfee Livesafe, which does nothing but tell me my subscription is expired and offer to renew it.
I can’t uninstall it from settings or control panel. It’ll ask me for permission, open a white box, and then close the white box and do nothing.
I tried using the removal tool, and it shut itself down from a lack of response.
I tried rebooting into safe mode, and my computer just… shut down and rebooted normally when I manually turned it back on. When it did so, it told me that my McAfee subscription had expired. It was running, despite the fact that I took it off the list of applications to run at startup.
Out of desperation, I tried deleting the McAfee files themselves, not even sure if that would help or make things worse. It didn’t matter, because my computer decided that I needed administrator approval to do that. I am the administrator!
I tried opening the command box and copying a few lines I found online. My computer didn’t even recognize the commands. I don’t remember what the commands were.
I am out of things to try. I just want less things bogging down my already slow computer, and McAfee is doing nothing but that. The only thing I can think at this point is a factory reset, which would just be too much recovery for such small reward. Is there anything else I can do to get rid of it? Or any way to backup everything except that before a reset?
