I find it so frustrating that this is even an issue after all these years of Windows being one of two dominant operating systems for 30 years now. I've had this problem for the last couple of years as well and have never found a solution that works 100%. Such a BASIC feature Microsoft!!!! How could they get this so wrong......
Windows 11 Explorer Search Not Finding Everything
Can someone please tell me why my Explorer search will not find information I know I have. I have many folders which contain Word - Excel - PDF - Tif files etc. I need to search these folders many times each day to locate historical information. It will find some but not all of the information I know is there. I am not a computer expert so please explain to me in laymen's terms (screenshots are even better)
Im pretty sure it was working up until maybe 1 week ago - I have not changed anything - all updates are done - it is causing me major issues with work

2024-08-28T19:20:21+00:00 At my company we have a similar problem in File Explorer (Win 11). About 40% of the time it won't search at all when you type your search criteria and hit Enter. I will cut the search criteria out of the Search box and paste it back in. Sometimes it will then work. Sometimes it won't.

Have you verified that the folders being searched are indexed (using Control Panel > Indexing Options)? Have you tried rebuilding the index? Are these network shares? Are you trying to search file names, file contents, or both?

2024-04-03T11:37:53+00:00 Hello there,
Sorry to hear you're experiencing these issues with the search function and hope the following:
- FOR OUTLOOK SEARCH: 1.1)In Outlook, select the Search box. 1.2)On the ribbon, select Search Tools, and then choose Indexing Status.
The following solutions are referenced and taken from the following source for further clarification please visit: https://support.microsoft.com/office/cc54dfee-ee78-4123-a9af-7986748052ef
- Indexing: Windows uses an index to quickly find files and folders. If the index is incomplete or corrupted, search results may be incomplete. You can rebuild the search index to fix this: 2.1)Open Control Panel and go to Indexing Options. 2.2)Click on Advanced and then Rebuild under Troubleshooting.
3)File Type: Make sure the file types you are searching for are included in the search index. Search Filters: Windows Explorer applies search filters by default, such as only searching in indexed locations.
4)Sometimes, this can cause it to miss files. You can try searching without filters: 4.1)In the search box in Windows Explorer, try typing the search term followed by *. For example, report* will search for files starting with "report."
5)Check Folder Settings: Ensure that the folders you are searching in are set to be indexed. Right-click on a folder, go to Properties, and make sure Allow files in this folder to have contents indexed is checked.
6)Windows Search Troubleshooter: Windows has a built-in troubleshooter for search-related issues. You can access it through Settings > Update & Security > Troubleshoot > Search and Indexing.
7)Check File Attributes: If files are marked as system files or hidden, they may not show up in search results unless you've configured Explorer to show hidden/system files.
8)Third-Party Antivirus: Sometimes, third-party antivirus software can interfere with Windows search. Temporarily disabling the antivirus can help identify if it's causing the problem.
9)Check Disk for Errors: Use the built-in Windows Error Checking tool to scan your disk for errors that might be affecting search.
i hope the following solutions help solve your problem and should you have any further problems/concerns please do not hesitate to contact me again.
Thanks,
Parth P.
