Hey,

I was trying to update my windows from 10 to 11 and needed to turn on secure booting. I have a MSI motherboard. So to turn it on I went into the BIOS and enabled it. Now my PC is not working anymore, if I turn it on I get the recovery system of Windows.

I get this errorcode:

G:\Recovery\WindowsRE\Winre.wim\system32\logfiles\srt\srttrail.txt

PS: Sorry for grammar or language errors. English is not my native language.

Edit: Its working again after I disabled Windows 10 WHQL support in the BIOS. But secure boot is also disabled. Is there a reason why my PC is not working with that setting.

    Hey,

Thank you for the reply and for the support.

I updated my drivers through the MSI website so everything is up to date now. After that I tried to enable secure boot again in the BIOS and after trying some things I think I've found the problem.

So if I enable the Windows 10 WHQL support option in the BIOS it changes some other settings. One setting is the boot mode. The boot mode before the setting is "LEGACY + UEFI" and when enabeling Windows 10 WHQL support the setting changes to "UEFI". After some research on the internet people are saying I have to convert my disk from MBR to GPT. I got two disks located on my computer. One named "Disk 0" with GPT and "Disk 1", the main disk with MBR. Disk 1 is the disk where windows is on installed.

I found out Windows has a tool to convert the disk from MBR to GPT named MBR2GTP. When I am trying to run the tool in the command promp ofline I get the message the following message back:
'mbr2gtp' is not recognized as an internal or external command,

    operable program or batch file.

I tried exploring other options. I found to options: Paying for a tool what can convert the disk from MBR to GPT what can cost around 50-100 euro. The second option is installing windows again.

My question is now, is there a way to make the converter work or another way that doesn't cost me a little money or require me to reset my computer?
I can understand that it is not possible or that the problem could lie somewhere else.

    Best Regards,

    Hello

Thank you for your patience and let me explain it to you line by line.

You mentioned that you might have installed an uncertified driver, you can try visiting the official website of your hardware manufacturer (such as MSI, or any other vendor of your hardware) and download and install the latest driver that is officially available. These drivers are usually verified to be compatible with Secure Boot.

As for your BIOS problem, an outdated BIOS may indeed affect the normal operation of your system, as newer versions of BIOS usually include support for new hardware and security features. Thus, updating the BIOS can solve many compatibility and stability issues and bring help to the current situation, but as you said, this step is risky. Since the BIOS is the underlying software that interacts directly with the hardware and is no longer in the scope of the operating system, which is stored in the flash memory chip of the motherboard, it is recommended that you perform a BIOS update under the guidance of the motherboard manufacturer so that you can more easily roll back to a previous version if problems arise.

    Hello,

Thank you for the reply. My preferred language is Dutch but I am okay with English.

So if I understand it correctly the problem can be that I got uncertified drives on my computer what is causing problems what is the consequence of that secure booting is not working. My PC system model is MS-7B28.

If I look at the data what I can find about my PC in system information I can see my BIOS is outdated. My BIOS version is American Megatrends Inc. 1.10 with as date 29-3-2018. The SMBIOS version is 2.8.

Can an outdated BIOS influence the system not working? And if that is the case, what do you advise me to do. I know from experience that updating a BIOS is risky and you need some computer experience what I dont have.

    Kind regards,
    Marijn Klasens

    Hello,Marijn Klasens

Thank you for posting in the Microsoft community.

The problem you are experiencing is closely related to secure boot and hardware compatibility.

The main purpose of Secure Boot is to load only authenticated operating systems and drivers when the system boots, which helps prevent malware intrusion. So when you enable Secure Boot, the system restricts the loading of certain uncertified drivers. This means that if you have incompatible or unsigned drivers on your computer, they can cause boot conflicts and eventually prevent your computer from booting properly. For example, the error code you see (G:\Recovery\WindowsRE\Winre.wim\system32\logfiles\srt\srttrail.txt) is usually related to the boot repair process, and it indicates that the system has hit a snag when trying to boot. Even though Windows tries to fix these problems, the root cause is not resolved and the computer still fails to boot successfully.

If you wish to continue using Secure Boot, it is recommended to check and update all relevant drivers to make sure they are up-to-date and signed. Also, check the BIOS setup to make sure that all options are appropriate for Windows 11. It is highly recommended that you ask your computer manufacturer if they support Safe Boot as a feature, or if you prefer, what is the exact model number of the device you are currently using? We can assist you in looking into this.

I see that you are not a native English speaker, so you can tell me your preferred language and I can provide you with the appropriate language service. If you have any further questions or need additional assistance, please feel free to ask! I hope these explanations help you better understand the current situation.

Thank you for your understanding and cooperation!
