How to disable ALT code emojis?

Hi all,

I'm using a Windows 11 on an ASUS laptop. I recently tried to use ALT+ 0151 to create an em dash, but instead it gave me a blushing smiley face. This happened in Windows Explorer, various browsers, Excel and others as a line drawing, and various other chararcters in programs that don't understand the input. Word, however, acts normally. I presume its own settings override the OS.

I'd prefer to not have this enabled, but I haven't found the proper settings. Can anyone advise?

    Hi Paul,

    Thank you for reaching out!

My name is Stefano and it’s my pleasure to assist you today.

Windows does not have the option to disable these shortcuts. but you can use PowerToys to add a setting to disable it. Install PowerToyes from the Microsoft Store:

    https://apps.microsoft.com/store/detail/XP89DCG...

After installing PowerToys, open it and select "Keyboard Manager" in the left menu > Remap a shortcut.

Under "Physical shortcut" press the + button > Type and press the shortcut on the keyboard > OK. Under Mapped to: select "Disable" in the dropdown menu (first option in the list) > OK to save.

See the Microsoft Community source article :

    Kind regards,

    Stefano

Thank you Stefano. As it happens, I already have something similar and didn't think to use it. One way or the other, I'll go with this method. Thanks again for your advice.
