    Dear Geoff Haresceugh,

Thank you for reaching out to the Microsoft Community.

I understand that you're having trouble with your power settings on Windows 11 not being retained after a restart, which can be frustrating.

There are a few possible reasons why your power settings may not be saving correctly, and I'll guide you through some steps to help resolve this issue:

    1. Check for Conflicting Power Plans. A default or custom power plan can override your changes. Go to Settings > System > Power & battery.****Under Power mode, ensure your preferred plan is selected (such as Balanced or Best power efficiency).

    2. Reset Power Plans to Default:

    • Open Command Prompt as an administrator by typing cmd into the search bar, right-clicking it, and selecting Run as administrator.
    • In the Command Prompt window, type the following command and hit Enter: powercfg -restoredefaultschemes
    • This will restore all power plans to their default settings. You can then go back into Power Options and reapply your desired settings.

**3. Update Your Display and Power Management Drivers.**Outdated drivers can cause issues with power settings. Here’s how to ensure your drivers are up to date:

    • Right-click the Start button and select Device Manager.
    • Expand the Display adapters section and Network adapters, right-click on each driver, and select Update driver.
    • You can also visit your laptop manufacturer’s website to download the latest drivers.

**4. Create a Custom Power Plan.**If default power plans don’t retain your settings, creating a custom power plan may help:

    • Press Windows + R and type powercfg.cpl > OK.
    • In the Power Options window, click Create a power plan from the left panel.
    • Set your custom preferences for screen timeout and sleep, and give your new plan a unique name. Apply this plan and see if the settings persist after a restart.

By following these steps, you should be able to resolve the issue and get your power settings to save correctly after a restart.

If the issue persists, feel free to reach out again, and we can explore further troubleshooting.

    Best Regards,

Martin | Microsoft Community Support Specialist
