Can't open HEIC photos even with HEVC and HEIF extension installed

When I try to open HEIC photos from my iPhone 14 pro on my computer in the photos app I get the error "It looks like we don't support this file format." despite having installed both the HEIF and HEVC extensions from Microsoft.

I tried rebooting the machine after installing the extensions, and then I tried repairing the Photos app and the HEVC extension, with no effect.

Also, I don't see the HEIF extension in the installed app list, despite it being "installed" in the Microsoft store.

My computer is currently on Windows 11 home single language Version 23H2 with an AMD 2700X CPU and an RX590 GPU.

It is UNFATHOMABLE to me that with the constant updates by Microsoft on the Windows 11 platform, the powers that be cannot make this process easier. This is absolute craziness, given the many advances in technology these days. Or is this simply a way for Microsoft to make some extra money? C'mon Microsoft people, you can do better for the end users of your platforms.

    HEVC extension v2.2.10.0 is bugged.

It was driving me crazy (installed 3rd party viewers that only achieved low resolution, receiving codec missing errors, etc.), until I finally found that the latest HEVC was the culprit!

Fixed all problems by manually uninstalling the HEVC 2.2.10.0 and then manually installing 2.2.9.0 "DEVICE MANUFACTURER" version (this one: https://www.microsoft.com/store/productId/9N4WGH0Z6VHQ?ocid=pdpshare).

I had downloaded this last one from the Store-Rg-Adguard (as it was no longer available in my MS Store)

That was all. Built in Photo viewer was working again with heic images, 3rd party viewers the same, Media Player no longer showing codec search stuck error when playing mp4...

Note: make sure that HEIF image extension is installed in the MS STORE (I already had this).

Hi. I have the same problem but I could not solve it yet. Windows 11 here with HEIC and HEVC installed via the Store and still does not open Heic photos. I tried to uninstall HEVC and install the version in your link but "This app will not work in your device" I have a G7 gaming laptop 3 years old. Do I have a bug in my PC? I even uninstalled HEIC and HEVC xtension and reinstalled, reset photo app, unistalled Photos and reinstalled. Nothing works. I paid 2 usd for HEVC and also the HEVC bundle and still cannot open HEIC pictures. Digikam and Darktable can open them without problems but Microsoft Phots cannot.

Hi Jacob, I am a Microsoft user like you, trying to assist you in solving this problem together!

you can try uninstalling the extension and reinstalling it. Additionally, after installing the HEIC extension, you still cannot view HEIC images with lossless image quality

If it still cannot be viewed, it is recommended to use the following alternative methods:

    1. Install third-party image viewers that support HEIC format, such as ImageGlass, IrfanView, XnView, or FastStone Image Viewer
    2. Use an online HEIC converter to convert. heic to. jpg and other popular image formats.
