I had set Xbox games installation folder in Microsoft Store to specific folder in G drive. Even though I have changed it to original XboxGames folder in C drive, that specific folder and gamingroot keep appearing even after changing it back and deleting it multiple time. How can it be fixed?

    Dear Sean,

Thanks for your reply, sorry for the late reply. There may be other possibilities for this problem:

Cache problem: Not all of them have been cleaned up, resulting in the installation path being retained, and folders are constantly created to ensure that the application can be installed normally later.

Synchronization problem: Maybe when you installed "minecraft" before, you synchronized the path, which caused the old installation path to be automatically detected and the correct folder to be regenerated.

Regarding the solution, try to use professional uninstall software to uninstall Xbox and clean up all the data left after uninstallation (cache, registry, etc.). Then press win+R, enter "wsreset.exe" and press Enter. This will reset the Microsoft Store. Go to the "C:\Users\Username\AppData\Local\Temp" and "C:\Windows\Temp" paths, delete the contents of the Temp folder. Then reinstall Xbox in the Microsoft Store.

If this still doesn't solve your problem, I'm afraid there is no other quick way. I don't think you will reinstall the system because of this small problem, that would be too troublesome.

Before you start trying, you can create a system restore point to avoid some accidents.

Hope these steps can help you. Looking forward to your good news.

Nothing worked. Reinstalling gaming service did remove it for longer duration yet it again reappeared. I remember downloading minecraft into that folder but cancelling it halfway and again reinstalled to C drive. What should I do?

    Dear Sean,

Hello! Welcome to the Microsoft Community. I'm glad to be able to help you. If I don't understand your question, please let me know immediately.

I understand that you seem to have set the game installation folder to a specific folder of G at first, and then changed it back to C, but G keeps showing the previously deleted specific folder and gamingroot. I understand the trouble this problem has caused you, and I will try my best to help you solve it.

The issue you are experiencing is that the Xbox game installation folder and gamingroot file extension keep reappearing, even after you have changed it back to its original location. This may be due to some settings of the Xbox app or Microsoft Store not updating correctly. Here are some possible solutions:

    1. Clear the app cache:
    • You can try clearing the cache of the Xbox app:
    • Press the Windows + R keys to open the Run dialog box, type wsreset.exe, and press Enter. This will reset the cache of the Windows Store.
    1. Reset the Xbox app:

Go to Settings, Apps, Apps & features, find the Xbox app, click it, then select Advanced options, and finally click Reset. This will reset the app's settings and may solve the problem.

    1. Sometimes the Gaming Services application can retain the previous folder location. Open PowerShell as an administrator. Run the following command to remove the Gaming Services
      Get-AppxPackage -Name Microsoft.GamingServices | Remove-AppxPackage -AllUsers
Restart your computer. Reinstall Gaming Services by opening the Xbox app, which will prompt you to reinstall Gaming Services.
    2. Press Windows + R, type regedit, and press Enter. Navigate to:
      HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\GameDVR

Check for any entries related to the drive letter (seems to be G:) that keeps appearing as "gamingroot" that you mentioned, and delete them.

Disclaimer: Generally, modifying registry subkeys or work group is intended for advanced users, administrators, and IT Professionals. It can help fix some problems, **however, serious problems might occur if you modify the registry incorrectly. Therefore, make sure that you follow these steps carefully. For further protection, back up the registry before you modify it. Then, you can restore the registry if a problem occurs.**For more information about how to back up and restore the registry, click How to back up and restore the registry in Windows - Microsoft Support to view the article.

If you have played games in the past that installed specific folders in G, these folders may have been created during that time and not properly deleted when you uninstalled the game.

Even if you delete these folders, they may still reappear if you have games installed on your drive, as the Xbox app will recreate this folder for future game installations.

To prevent these folders from being created, you can try changing the default folder in the Xbox app (not the drive) to a different folder. However, please note that these folders are legitimate and are not harmful to your system.

Hope these steps can help you. If you have any questions, please let me know in time.
