Windows 10 Start Menu Not Working

May I ask, how did you upgrade to Windows 10? Kindly try to press the Windows key on your keyboard and check if it will open the Start Menu. If not, let's perform the troubleshooting methods below and check if any of the resolves fixes the issue.

Method 1: Check for Windows Update

1. Open settings by pressing windows key + I
2. Select Update and security
3. It will automatically check for available updates, if not, click the Check for updates button
4. Download and install available updates, restart your computer if necessary and check if the issue still persist.

Method 2: Run System File Checker

-This process will perform scan for any corrupted system files or integrity violation and will attempt to repair it along with the Windows Image.

1. Open command prompt (Run as administrator)
2. Type each command below and press enter, wait until scan is completed.

sfc /scannow

DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /CheckHealth

DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /ScanHealth

DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

Quick note: Please be patient, it's expected to see the process stuck at 20 or 40 percent. After a few minutes, the process will complete successfully.

3. Close the command prompt.

I didn't upgrade to Windows 10 - my system had Windows 10 installed as a fresh build PC.

Recently the Windows Key / Start-button (below) ceases to respond to either mouse click or key press.

The windows key works when using keyboard shortcuts such as Winkey+R to bring up Run prompt. Also Winkey+Shift+S works to trigger the snip tool program. The search box works fine as well. Winkey+I does nothing so I think it is a start menu issue.

I have run all the steps listed for user Samantha Clarke above. Checkhealth found some system issues. ScanHealth was then clear and Restore Health said nothing to restore.

I will advise you press ctrl+alt+del, open task manager and restart windows explorer. That seemed to work. Also performed pending windows and manufacturer udpates.

Is there any other way to resolve this issue?

I already tried the 2 method above but none of them succeed.

I have the same issue. Start menu does not work. Task bar search does not work. Cortana does not work, Windows + R is the only Windows+ function that works. Tried Method 2 I get "error 87" Did a system restore to a previous date, no change. Tried to open Windows Defender to run virus scan but when I clicked on the icon it would not open and now the icon is gone. I can surf the internet and access my files, pics and videos, but the windows function tied to the task bar are not working. I don't know what else to do short of reloading windows.
